Vibrations then pass through the middle-ear bones into the cochlea of the inner ear, where specialized sensory cells convert mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. The auditory nerve carries these signals toward the brain, where they are interpreted as meaningful sounds. A problem at any point in this pathway can interfere with hearing. Hearing loss therefore does not always originate from the same part of the ear. A child can have a temporary reduction in hearing because of fluid behind the eardrum, or permanent hearing impairment resulting from damage to the cochlea, auditory nerve or central auditory pathways. The World Health Organization defines hearing loss in relation to hearing thresholds and recognizes different degrees, ranging from mild to profound. Hearing loss can affect one ear or both ears. What Is Hearing Loss in Children?

Hearing loss in children means reduced ability to detect or understand sounds at an age when normal hearing is expected. The degree of impairment differs considerably from child to child. A child with mild hearing loss can hear ordinary conversation in a quiet environment but struggle with soft speech or background noise. Moderate hearing loss can make normal conversation difficult without amplification. Severe hearing loss significantly limits access to spoken language, while profound hearing loss results in very limited or absent access to ordinary conversational sounds. Hearing loss can be:

Ayurvedic View of Hearing Loss in Children

In Ayurvedic literature, impaired hearing is described under Badhirya, a disorder involving reduced or absent ability to perceive sound and included among Karna Roga (diseases of the ear). For childhood hearing loss, a Vata-dominant pathogenesis provides a suitable Ayurvedic framework. Vata is responsible for movement, transmission and sensory functions, making its proper functioning important for normal hearing. When Vata becomes aggravated and affects the Karna (ear) and Shrotrendriya (sense organ of hearing), the normal perception of sound becomes disturbed. Kapha can further contribute when its qualities produce heaviness, congestion or obstruction in the structures involved in sound conduction. This is particularly relevant in conditions where blockage, fluid or excessive secretions interfere with the passage of sound. The pathogenesis can therefore be understood as Vata aggravation with involvement of Karna and Shrotrendriya → disturbance of normal auditory function → impaired perception of sound → Badhirya. When Kapha contributes through obstruction, the normal conduction of sound becomes further compromised.
Management of Badhirya focuses primarily on Vata-shamana (Vata pacification) along with appropriate nourishment and maintenance of neurological and sensory health. When Kapha-related obstruction is evident, measures directed toward reducing congestion and maintaining proper physiological function are considered according to the child’s individual condition. Fresh, nourishing and easily digestible foods should be incorporated according to the child’s age and digestive capacity. Regular meals, adequate sleep and a stable daily routine are also important for maintaining healthy Vata function. Brimhana (nourishing) and Rasayana (rejuvenative) approaches can be considered when the child requires additional nutritional and neurological support. Herbs such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) are used in Ayurvedic formulations directed toward strength, nervous-system health and cognitive function. Local Ayurvedic procedures involving the ear require particular caution in children. Karnapurana (medicated oil therapy for the ear) should not be performed when there is ear discharge, suspected eardrum perforation, acute ear infection, recent ear surgery or an undiagnosed ear condition. Such procedures should only be considered after appropriate examination by a qualified professional. The management of childhood hearing loss should always begin with determining the type and severity of hearing impairment.
