Introduction
Radiculopathy is characterized by a pinched nerve within the spine. It happens with changes in close bones and gristle from wear and tear, or from injury. Most typically, the nervous disorder is related to a disc herniation. It causes chronic changes within the spine and should occur with trauma or without trauma. It is vital to notice that not all disc herniation causes nervous disorder or pain. Whereas any nerve root is affected, the lower cervical (neck) and lower body part (low back) levels are the foremost commons. As a result of the fibers of one spinal nerve root give sensation and strength to a specific region of the body, arm, or leg, a compressed nerve can cause symptoms within the region wherever the nerve provides strength and sensation. Nerves in your neck give sensation and strength in your arms, whereas nerves in your low back give sensation and strength in your legs. These changes could cause pressure on a nerve root. The spine is a structure that is made up of 133, bones that protect our spinal cord from any kind of injury. It is the role of the spine that allow a person to sit straight, bending its body, etc. So, it is important to diagnose it and take proper treatment to reduce its symptoms.
Types of Radiculopathy
There are three major types of Radiculopathy:
- Cervical Radiculopathy: It occurs when a nerve in the upper back or neck is compressed. This will create pain in shoulders, numbness in arms and legs, and weakness in muscles.
- Thoracic Radiculopathy: It occurs when a nerve in the mid-back region is compressed and a person experiences pain in the chest. This type of radiculopathy is very rare. It may cause tingling, numbness, burning pain in the rib, etc.
- Lumbar Radiculopathy: It occurs when a nerve is compressed in the lower back, hips, and legs. A person may experience numbness in the lower back and foot. In some cases, it shows the symptoms such as sharp pain with coughing, pain in the arm, pain in the shoulder, etc.

Causes of Radiculopathy
Usually, it is caused by the change in the tissues that are covered by the nerve roots. All the tissues include bones of the spinal vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and tendons. When there is a change in size, shape in nerves then the space between the nerve roots becomes narrow from where the nerve roots travel inside the spine. This is called foramina and it is caused due to spinal injury. There are many causes of radiculopathy and that are discussed below:
- Herniated Disc: It is a very common cause of foraminal stenosis. The role of the spinal disc is that it acts as a cushion between your vertebrae. When there is a slip out of discs in your spinal cord then, it becomes damaged. It occurs in the lower back and also affects your neck.
- Bone Spurs: The second cause of radiculopathy is bone spurs. The extra growth of bone leads to bone spurs. It is caused due to swellings from trauma, and other degenerative conditions.
Who is at Risk for Radiculopathy?
Many changes in the spinal cord occur above the age of 40. There are many factors that may increase the risk of radiculopathy such as poor posture, pregnant women, being overweight, a family history, repetitive motions, etc. all are at risk of this disorder.
Diagnosis of Radiculopathy
When you consult a doctor for your cause, a doctor may first physically examine you and then, proceeds with other steps such as X-ray, MRI scan, CT scan, and many more tests.
