Treatment for Anasarca in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies
Anasarca is a swelling of the whole body. The body is a single structure but made up of billions of small structures. These small structures are of four kinds i.e. cells, tissues, organs and systems. An organ is an organization of various different kinds. The health of our body is the biggest wealth for anybody. But due to some unhygienic or sedentary lifestyle, we make our body sick and ultimately suffer from various diseases. In this article, we are going to discuss one of the diseases in Anasarca and its ayurvedic management in detail.
Anasarca is a generalized form of edema. This is a swelling of subcutaneous tissue throughout the body and is a pathological process that reflects a severe disease in the body. In Anasarca, there is an accumulation of fluid in different body parts. This condition occurs when there is a change in the proteins of the body. When there is an abnormal excretion of proteins out from the body then it leads to the accumulation of fluid in the body cavities. Edema can affect the whole body and when this happens, the skin and its underlying tissues will retain salt and water and ultimately cause swelling all over the body. This condition is known as anasarca and it is also known as extreme generalized edema.
This condition is caused by a decreased oncotic pressure. The most common and less common causes of anasarca are
Most common causes
- Liver cirrhosis
- Kidney failure
- Right-sided heart failure
- Severe malnutrition
- Allergic reactions
Less common causes
- Administration of excess IV fluids
- Use of anticancer drugs
- Hb Bart disease (alpha-thalassemia)
- Use of calcium channel blocker
Clinical features/Signs and symptoms
As we discussed earlier, anasarca affects the whole body and is extremely generalized edema. Symptoms of Anasarca are
- Pitting edema (skin will show identification when you press a finger on it)
- Slow or fast heartbeat
- Failing organ systems
- Feeling extreme uncomfortable or debilitating
- Impaired vision
- Perioral edema
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
Diagnosis of anasarca is made clinically and differentiated from edema by the extent of the involvement of the body parts. Edema can affect one or two parts of the body, but anasarca affects the whole body. This is most often seen in low levels of albumin.
Some blood investigations are
- A blood test series should be done to check heart function, liver and kidney functions
Treatment of anasarca
As we discussed above, this is not a disease itself. So the best treatment is to treat the underlying cause. To help get the fluid out of the body, we have to use diuretics for anasarca. One of the common drugs used as a diuretic is Furosemide (Lasix). It helps to excrete the excess fluid from the body. But the most common side effects from the use of diuretics are electrolyte imbalance.
