Use of Enbrel Injections Along with Ayurvedic Herbs for Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects the person socially and psychologically. The chronic and recurring nature of the disease hampers the quality of the life of the patients to a large extent. It is an auto-immune disorder in which the scaling and itching in the papulosquamous lesions of the skin disturb the daily activities of the patients.
The integration of Enbrel injections along with Ayurvedic herbs is an important move in the effective and safe management of psoriasis.
What is the Ayurvedic Perspective of Psoriasis?
- In Ayurvedic literature, Psoriasis is termed as ‘Kitibha’. It is a well-known disease in Ayurvedic fraternity from the times immemorial as the pathogenesis, treatment, etc. of psoriasis are well defined in Ayurvedic text Charak Samhita.
- It is one of the varieties of eleven kshudra kushthas and caused by the vitiation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. It is clear that Psoriasis mainly occurs due to the vitiation of Rasa, Rakta and Mamsa dhatus. The remaining other dhatus are not involved but after the long course of the disease, nail and joint involvement are also found which indicate the involvement of deeper dhatus as well.
- In psoriasis, dhatus are involved and vitiation of dhatus takes place due to the vitiated doshas. Dhatukasahaya (vitiation of dhatus) will lead to ojokashaya (vitiation of immunity) and ojas also gets depleted due to stress, anger, etc. which are considered as the triggering factors.

Meaning: According to this shloka, ekkushta is defined as the disease in which there is no perspiration, it affects the large areas and looks like fishy scales.
As per Ayurveda, the causes of all the skin disorders are common such as
- Intake of contradictory food items like fish with milk, sour fruits with milk, intake of heavy drinks, suppression of natural urges like sleep, vomiting, etc.
- Intake of cold water immediately after coming from the scorching sun.
- Intake of uncooked food before the previous meal is digested.
- Physical exercise after taking heavy meals.
Treatment
- According to modern medicine, topical corticosteroids, topical retinoids, anthralin, phototherapy, Enbrel injections are prescribed.
- Doctors generally start the treatment with the prescription of creams or lotions that go directly onto the skin. Light therapy or phototherapy is also prescribed which also works on the surface of the skin but for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.
- Now doctors are turning towards biologics which work inside the body. Biologics are a type of treatment that is made from the living cells. Enbrel injection is one of the examples of biologics which works on the immune system and useful in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and to prevent joint damage from these conditions.
- These injections are used to treat a wide range of auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis, etc.
How do Enbrel Injections Work?
- Etanercept prevents the action of TNF which works by transporting the white blood cells to the areas of inflammation, due to which inflammation gets worse.
- In this way, Enbrel injections are effective in the treatment of psoriasis.
- Enbrel Injections can be used in the treatment of psoriasis along with Ayurvedic treatment and later should be stopped. Both of these treatments can provide relief from psoriasis.
- There is no harm in taking both Enbrel injection and ayurvedic medicines simultaneously. In due course of time, the Ayurvedic doctor may reduce the dose of Enbrel injection depending on the condition of the patient.
- Some people suffer acute infections by using Enbrel injections so Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis can be prescribed in parallel to allopathic treatment as Ayurveda works by ‘defense strategy’ rather than ‘offense strategy’.
