Ocular Surface Disease

Introduction

Ocular surface disease refers to disease of the surface layers of the eye that consist of cornea and conjunctiva. Ocular glands (lacrimal glands and meibomian glands) that manage the tears and oil production in the eyes are hampered which directly affects the quality and quantity of healthy tears. Since the ocular surface is a delicate area and abnormal surroundings and environment can cause disturbance to it. The abnormal lids anatomy along with altered (decreased) tear production-like clinical signs are noticed in Ocular surface disease causative factors. In surface layer damage the tissues are degenerated due to persisting symptoms. This tissue can degenerate from the anterior or posterior region of the eye surface.

Ayurvedic Aspect

Netra (eyes) is the site of Pittaj dosha. Balanced pitta dosha keeps the eyes functioning properly, but imbalanced or aggravated pitta dosha can affect the eyes in many ways that can even cause blindness. Excess pitta dosha can soak the tear films of the eye and cause excess rookshta (dryness) of the eyes. Indirectly or directly the dosha is responsible for the abnormalities in the eyes. While many medicines and panchakarma therapies including ashchyotan, tarpana, etc are being performed to deal with those abnormal eye symptoms.

Causes

There are many causes for the occurrence of Ocular surface disease. But some main causes are

Symptoms

Diagnosis

  • Ocular surface disease is diagnosed by a special test called Ocular surface staining. In this test equipment like slit lamp and fluorescein, lissamine green-like chemicals are used to perform the procedure. The procedure is performed to detect degenerated and dead tissues on the eye surface.
  • Tear break-up time
  • Corneal examination
  • Meibomian gland and lacrimal gland examination
  • Schimer’s test

Treatment

The treatment depends on the area, site, and severity of degenerated tissue. The general treatment followed is

Product Description

1. Angel Eye Vitale Capsules

These are ayurvedic capsules for the eye’s healthy well-being that compose of Amla (Emblica officinalis), Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), and Gotukola (Centella asiatica). Amla is very famous for its good properties toward body benefits and eyes. These capsules will keep the eyes healthy by improving all glands functioning. These oil-based capsules maintain natural water plus oil consistency in the eyes.

Dosage- Take 1 capsule twice a day.

2. Saptamrit Loha

This formulation contains Sapt magical herbs with Lauh (Iron calx).
