ABSTRACT

Distemper in dogs is a preventable and curable disease. It usually occurs more in females than males with a fatality rate of 69.75%. The fatalities are more in male dogs as compared to female dogs. It can be seriously fatal in some cases and those who survive may have severe nervous system damage. Puppies below 4 months and unvaccinated dogs are more prone to get infected although all the dogs are at risk. Distemper in dogs

INTRODUCTION

Distemper is caused by a virus named CDV (Canine Distemper virus) that is paramyxovirus which attacks their gastrointestinal system, respiratory and nervous system. It is a contagious disease, it can be also found in other wildlife such as tigers, lions, wildcats, racoons, etc. but dogs and puppies are more commonly affected. This usually transfers from one to another. For this the preventive vaccinations are given at the age of 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The recovery of an infected dog may take up to 3 weeks.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

Following are the symptoms which can be seen in early and later stages, the symptoms can take up to 10-14 days to be seen after the exposure in the early stage. The severe symptoms can take up to a few weeks to months to appear.

In early stage

  • Pyrexia (high fever)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Discharge from eyes and nose
  • Dehydration
  • Tiredness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Bacterial infection
  • Trouble in breathing

In Later stage

  • Convulsions
  • Ataxia (Inco-ordination)
  • Muscle twitching
  • Head tilt
  • Increased salivation
  • Convulsions
  • Full body paralysis or partial paralysis
  • Inflammation of eyes.
  • Seizures
  • Thickened paw pads and nose

CAUSES

Following are the causes of distemper in dogs

  • Virus- Paramyxovirus that is canine distemper virus.
  • Improper vaccination or un vaccinated
  • Through infected dog
  • Weak Immunity

SPREADING OF DISEASE

It can be spread through the following pathways

  • DIRECT CONTACT – Skin to Skin contact, food, water or other body fluids.
  • DROPLET INFECTION – Through sneezing, coughing, etc
