How to Treat Diarrhea in Horses with Ayurveda
ABSTRACT
Diarrhea is very common in horses. It requires proper management to keep the horse in a healthy state. The horse’s digestive system is very similar to that of the humans. The horse is an herbivore i.e. the diet it consumes is of plant material. It is unique in its own way and the diet should be given very carefully to the horse to maintain its digestive system in good health. The diarrhea in horses along with its features, diagnosis and management will be discussed in detail in the following article.
INTRODUCTION
Diarrhea in horses can be a result of a fluctuation or disturbance in the routine diet. When the cause of diarrhea is a simple stomach upset it will get back to normal by itself without the administration of any type of medicine. If the diarrhea is accompanied by any other type of symptoms, then it may need some urgent medical attention of a veterinary doctor.
CAUSES
The cause of diarrhea in horses could be a normal diet upset i.e. any change from the normal routine diet. The cause of diarrhea may also be an underlying infection such as parasitic, bacterial, viral, etc. There may be a variety of reasons that may result in diarrhea in horses. Some of the causes may include stress (long time spent in extreme temperatures), intestinal parasites, malfunction of intestines, other infections and some rare cases of cancer, etc.
SYMPTOMS
Horses present the following symptoms when they are suffering from diarrhea. The feces passed by the horse are softer than normal. The feces may emit a very bad smell. The color of feces in diarrhea may be of greenish – brown color. The feces are so thin that they break in semi solid forms depicting the undigested food. The feces may be in semi solid form or totally watery in consistency.
DIAGNOSIS
The veterinary doctor will diagnose the causes of diarrhea through the clinical examination. The clinical examination will include clinical observations along with the history taking of the case. The veterinarian will examine the cause by enquiring about the recent diets given to the horse and the physical activity performed by it. The blood and fecal samples can be taken and sent for the lab investigations. If there are any worm infestations or any bacterial infestation, it could be diagnosed through various lab investigations.
TREATMENT
Usually the diarrhea in horses caused by diet upset resolves by itself within a few days and does not require any medical intervention. The diarrhea accompanied with any other systemic symptoms or abnormalities requires proper diagnosis and management. The medical management for the diarrhea in horses will include correcting water and electrolyte imbalance, cyathostomiasis, corticosteroids, analgesics, etc.
AYURVEDIC ASPECT
The diarrhea can be correlated to atisara in Ayurveda. Atisara (diarrhea) is considered to be a result of agni dushti (imbalance in the digestive elements). The agni (digestive fire) is responsible for the proper digestion of the food consumed and the nourishment of the body. When the balance of agni (digestive fire) is hindered, the consumed food is not digested properly and it leads to abnormality in the stool consistency. It is very important to keep the agni (digestive fire) in its natural state to maintain the healthy state of the body.
The main aim of the management of atisara (diarrhea) in horses is to correct the levels of agni (digestive fire). This will need restricting the causative factors resulting in atisara (diarrhea) along with administration of medicinal herbs. There are various Ayurvedic preparations that benefit the health of horses and improve the condition of atisara (diarrhea) in horses such as digestion support, Mahashankh vati, Motion stop, etc.
