Charley horse

Introduction

Charley horse is a sudden involuntary muscular disease that causes muscle contractions (that ultimately causes muscles to cramp) in one or both legs. This is a very painful condition due to continuous muscle contractions. The continuous involuntary contractions of muscles will make the muscles fatigued which will in return start hurting and cause extreme pain. These Charley horse muscular cramps need to be distinguished from normal muscle cramps like- Dystonia, myotonia, myalgia, etc. Cramps can occur as a result of suddenly tired muscles or nerve damage. The problem in blood flow due to nerve damage in diabetic patients can increase muscle cramps. Poor blood flow, lack of magnesium and potassium, being inactive for a long time, and sudden activity, can trigger Charley horse. Athletes face these cramps very often and need immediate management to save their practice time.

Normally muscle cramps are self-treatable and reduce themselves within a few days or weeks. But the pain during the recovery needs to be managed to avoid the pain hindering your daily activities.

Ayurvedic Aspect

The pain in any body part indicates excess Vata dosha accumulation. When excess vata gets aggravated and gets accumulated in Muscles (mams) it causes extreme pain and other abnormalities associated with it. The accumulation of Vata in mams is indicated as Mamsgatvata dosha, which can be correlated with muscle cramps (Charley horse). The metabolic waste (not excreted), toxins, and aam dosha get deposited in the body parts and leads to doshas imbalance (vata dosha aggravation), which ultimately shows these painful and abnormal symptoms.
