Alternative Medicines for Intestinal Intussusception – Digestive System Disorders

Abstract

The human digestive system consists of the accessory organs of digestion and the gastrointestinal tract. The major function of the digestive system is the breakdown of food particles into tiny components until they can assimilate or be absorbed into the body. The major organs of the digestive system are the mouth, esophagus, small intestine, large intestine, stomach, anus, and rectum. When the digestive system is not able to perform its function properly it may lead to several digestive system disorders. Intestinal intussusception is also a serious disorder of the digestive system.

In this article, we are going to discuss Intestinal intussusception, its sign, and symptoms, causes, and some herbal remedies for the management of this disease.

Introduction

Intestinal is the digestive disorder in which one segment of the intestine slips into the neighboring segment of the intestine. Intestinal intussusception usually occurs at the intersection of the large and small intestine. In this condition, the intestine folds together similar to the way a collapsible telescope folds together, so this condition is also called telescoping. This Intestinal intussusception may cause bowel obstruction that blocks the fluid or food from passing through. This condition also blocks the blood supply to the affected part of the intestine, which results in infection and death of bowel tissue. In infants, it is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction.  The obstruction of the intestine can cause inflammation and swelling that can lead to intestinal impairment. During winter this problem is increased in children, because during winters children also have flu-like symptoms.

Symptoms

The first symptom of intestinal intussusception is severe abdominal pain due to which infants’ starts crying louder. When infants cry, they pull their knees to their chests. Some patients of intestinal intussusception are asymptomatic. Certain infants only have pain and no other symptoms.

Some Other Symptoms of Intestinal Intussusception Include

  •  Stool mixed with mucus and blood (because of its appearance it is also known as currant jelly
  • Vomiting
  • A lump in the abdomen
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea

Causes

Intestines are shaped like a long tube and intussusception is said to occur when one part of your intestine, usually the small intestine, slides inside an adjacent part. This condition is also known as telescoping because the intestine folds together similar to the way a collapsible telescope folds together. In certain cases, telescoping may occur due to the abnormal growth in the intestine i.e. a tumor or a polyp. This abnormal growth is also known as the lead point. The normal peristaltic wave of the intestine grabs this lead point and pulls it and the intestinal lining comes into forward point which is ahead of it. In most of the cases, there is no specific cause for intestinal intussusception.

Treatment of Intestinal intussusception

In modern medicine, surgical procedure is required in adults to correct the problem. In infants, sometimes an X-ray procedure is necessary to bring back intestines to their actual position. In Ayurveda, this problem is treated without any surgical procedure. This disease is treated with the help of several herbal medications.
