Transverse Myelitis Treatment in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Abstract

Have you ever stopped to consider how dependent we all are on the entire skeletal system to accomplish your effort into movements?

The word “itis” always stands for inflammation. Transverse myelitis is a condition associated with inflammation on either side of the spinal cord. This neurological condition often scars the myelin sheath, the insulating material of neurons that facilitate the jumping action of electrical response to complete the action arch. Due to this inflammation it interrupts the message transmission between spinal cord and all other neuron- muscular junctions.

Even though it’s exact cause is unknown to man, recent studies have found transverse myelitis as a consequence of other viral infections or autoimmunity disease in particular. Frequently, as a result of disputed communication between neurons, this is often confused with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurological disease.

Transverse Myelitis can occur irrespective of age, race or gender. It does not appear with genetic runs. It is usually seen in the age groups between 10 to 19 and 30 to 39.

General treatment protocol adopted for transverse myelitis is systemic medications and rejuvenative therapies. According to Ayurveda, a few studies done with respect to modern medicines have come to the conclusion that transverse myelitis may be correlated with Urustambha with Vata Avarana to derive a treatment plan, other than offering symptomatic relief.

Symptoms of Transverse Myelitis

The Typical symptoms include

1. Pain

A sharp shooting acute low back pain is generally seen and often misunderstood for simple low back ache. Depending on the site of inflammation within the spinal cord, the intensity and areas associated with pain also vary, including in the arms, chest or even abdomen.

2. Abnormal sensations

Certain individuals also tend to have feelings like pins and needles, tingling sensation and even burning sensations in the extremities. Some are exteriorly sensitive to light touches of clothing to heat or cold temperature variations. Often a few people have reported a feeling of being wrapped with a blanket kind of  sensation in the under skin.

3. Weakness in limbs

Some people may notice acute heaviness in their limbs with a dragging dropping gait. Often the severity of the condition is at its peak that even paralysis of the limb is seen.

4. Bladder and bowel problems

The spinal cord is responsible for all the natural reflexes of the body. Individuals affected with transverse myelitis are often affected with increased frequency of urination, urinary incontinence and even constipation.

Many people also report muscle spasms, general feeling of discomfort, headache, loss of appetite, while some people experience respiratory discomforts.

A number of neurological problems can cause the same signs and symptoms including compression of spinal cord. Another less common cause is the stroke of the spinal cord due to impaired blood circulation. Hence it is always important to get a prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Causes of Transverse myelitis

Causes of Transverse myelitis

Even though the exact cause is unknown, it is understood as the complication of viral infections including that of Hepatitis, HIV, Echovirus, Zika virus, Cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis B, Influenza, Mums, Measles and Rubella.

Other viruses may trigger an autoimmune response without directly affecting the spinal cord.A few bacterial infections such as Lyme disease, Syphilis, Tuberculosis and Diphtheria are also the precursor for transverse myelitis.

Other than the above mentioned conditions, it is often seen associated with Multiple Sclerosis or as an autoimmune response to vaccinations or environmental triggers. Although some people recover from transverse myelitis without any residual problems, the healing process can take months to years.

Ayurveda And Transverse Myelitis

In Caraka Samhita, the treatment modalities are divided into 6 modules. Shehana (Oleation therapy), Swedana (Fomentation therapy), Brumhana (Nourishing therapy), Langhana (Debilitating therapy), Rookshana (Drying therapy) and Stambhana (Astringent therapy).

For decades, Ayurvedic treatment has been found most effective and promising in neurological interventions 2. Most of the neurological disorders are considered as Vataja diseases and Shehana therapy is done along with the other therapies according to the combination of biogenesis.
