Tears in your eyes are not only a sign of sorrow but also keep an eye healthy. Healthy tears clean the dirt from the eyes. Imagine not having tears in the eyes, will make your eye too dry which will hinder its normal functioning- that is vision. Vision can be destroyed temporarily or permanently. Ocular surface disease is a disease of dry eyes that affects the surface layers of the eye. The ocular surface disease can be so serious and can even cause permanent vision loss if not treated early. In this article, we will discuss the clinical causes and symptoms of Ocular surface disease. Ocular surface disease refers to disease of the surface layers of the eye that consist of cornea and conjunctiva. Ocular glands (lacrimal glands and meibomian glands) that manage the tears and oil production in the eyes are hampered which directly affects the quality and quantity of healthy tears. Since the ocular surface is a delicate area and abnormal surroundings and environment can cause disturbance to it. The abnormal lids anatomy along with altered (decreased) tear production-like clinical signs are noticed in Ocular surface disease causative factors. In surface layer damage the tissues are degenerated due to persisting symptoms. This tissue can degenerate from the anterior or posterior region of the eye surface.
Netra (eyes) is the site of Pittaj dosha. Balanced pitta dosha keeps the eyes functioning properly, but imbalanced or aggravated pitta dosha can affect the eyes in many ways that can even cause blindness. Excess pitta dosha can soak the tear films of the eye and cause excess rookshta (dryness) of the eyes. Indirectly or directly the dosha is responsible for the abnormalities in the eyes. While many medicines and panchakarma therapies including ashchyotan, tarpana, etc are being performed to deal with those abnormal eye symptoms.
There are many causes for the occurrence of Ocular surface disease. But some main causes are
- Dry eye syndrome due to malfunctioning of tears producing oil glands of the eye.
- Facial nerve palsy
- Eye allergies
- Burn in eye region (chemical or thermal burn)
- Decreased tears production
- Side effects of ocular medical treatments
- Adverse effects of various medicines
- Wearing contact lenses can induce dry eyes
The symptoms person feels after suffering from Ocular surface disease are
- Burning feeling in the eyes
- A feeling of something irritating in the eyes
- Redness of eye
- Itchy eyes
- Watery eyes
- Stringy mucous in eyes
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty in doing things such as driving
- Light sensitivity
- Ocular surface disease is diagnosed by a special test called Ocular surface staining. In this test equipment like slit lamp and fluorescein, lissamine green-like chemicals are used to perform the procedure. The procedure is performed to detect degenerated and dead tissues on the eye surface.
- Tear break-up time
- Corneal examination
- Meibomian gland and lacrimal gland examination
- Schimer’s test
The treatment depends on the area, site, and severity of degenerated tissue. The general treatment followed is
- Warm compressor
- Artificial tears for dry eyes
- Antibiotic eye drops or oral intake
- Eyelid scrubs in blepharitis

2. Saptamrit Loha

3. Jasnoor Eye Drops

4. Triphala Ghrit
This triphala ghrit is indicated in Netra Rog (eye-related disorders). It improves vision through its oleation and rejuvenating properties. Triphala ghrit is used with different anupaans according to the dosha involved to increase its medicinal properties. Triphala ghrit with honey is beneficial in Kaphaj eye diseases, ghrit with ghee in Pittaj dosha, and ghrit with sesame oil is indicated in vataj dosha aggravated eye diseases.
Dosage- Take ½ teaspoon twice daily with warm water.
5. Amalaki Rasayan
This is a standard ayurvedic medicine in the form of rasayan, that is used in many ocular disorders. Amla (Emblica officinalis) the main and only ingredient of this rasayan is a rich source of vitamin C that has a cooling and soothing effect on the eyes. It will improve the outer eyelids’ health and will manage abnormal blepharitis symptoms. Amla can impose some hard impacts on the body and thus should be consumed in adequate amounts as directed by your doctor.
Dosage- Take 1 Capsule twice daily.
