Our gums are very prone to inflammation. So maintaining gum health should be a priority. There are various gum disorders like gingivitis (inflammation of gums), periodontitis. Periodontitis is a serious gum disease in which a person’s soft tissues of the gums are damaged which inturn destroys the bones that support the teeth that loosens the tooth. Periodontitis is the stage next to gingivitis. Gum recession is another type of gum problem in which the gum tissues are pulled away, exposing the roots of the teeth underneath. There are numerous factors responsible for gum recession like genetics, smoking, aggressive brushing etc. So here we shall be discussing the gum recession and its herbal management.
Gum recession is a type of gum disease. It is a gum condition in which the gums pull off and lead the tooth surface exposed and roots of the tooth as well that makes the tooth more prone to cavities. It will create gaps between teeth and gum that make space for the bacterial invasion. That may lead to serious gum infections. These may result from poor dental hygiene.
CAUSES OF TOOTH RECESSION
- Prolonged smoking
- Over aggressive brushing
- Hereditary , family history of gum diseases, thin fragile teeth
- Hardening of the plaque
- Poor dental flossing
- Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy)
- Tobacco eating habit
- Overcrowding of teeth
- Piercing of lip or tongue that me lead to recession due to friction

AYURVEDIC ASPECT AND MANAGEMENT OF GUM RECESSION
Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine existing from more than 3000 years which believes in healing. Ayurveda manages the ailments by purification of body and mind through herbal remedies, diet, therapeutic massage, yoga and meditation.
In ayurveda due to aggressive brushing that is agatha (injury) the vata dosha is vitiated causing the symptoms of receding gums. This condition in Ayurveda is called as Dantvaidharbha by our acharyas. It is a dantmoolgat vyadhi (disease of gums). It gives features like sarambh (swelling) and chala danta (loosening of teeth). Vitiation of vata dosha inturn vitiates pitta and rakta in the oral region which leads to bleeding of gums as well.
Management involves various herbs of katu (pungent), tikta (bitter), kashaye (astringent) rasa like khadir (Acacia catechu), irimeda (Acacia farnesiana), mushtak (cyperus rotundus), clove (Syzygium aromaticum)and many other herbs. Classical Ayurvedic text explained various herbal preparation like dashan sanskar churan, irimedadi oil, oil pulling (gandhoosh), sheet nasya (nasal oil), cold application , pratisaran (sprinkle of herbal powders) for the effective management of dental recession.
- Gently brushing teeth using soft bristles toothbrush
- Brushing twice a day regularly
- Regular dental flossing
- Avoid eating tobacco
- Stop smoking
- Using antimicrobial mouthwash
Classical Ayurvedic text has explained two procedures kaval and gadhoosh to be included in everyday regime (dincharya) for strong teeth and oral health. In kaval gargling with herbal kalk (paste) is done for 1 min and spitting it out. On the other hand, gandhoosh is filling the mouth with herbal decoction or oil and holding it for 2-3 min.

- Gargling with salt water with a pinch of turmeric
- Drinking green tea as it is an antioxidant
- Having omega 3 fatty acids (fish, nuts or seeds)
- Oil pulling with coconut oil or sesame oil
- Applying aloe vera, turmeric gel
- Using clove oil, eucalyptus oil
- Vitamin C supplements

1. Gum Care Powder
Gum care powder is a product of Planet Ayurveda formed with the quality herbs that strengthens the oral health. The herbs include shunthi (Gingiber officinale), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), mushtak (cyperus rotundus), khadir (Acacia catechu), kapoor (cinnamomum camphora), lavang (syzygium aromaticum), alum (safatika) and many others.
