Herbal Remedies for Giardiasis
Giardiasis also is known as Giardia intestinalis or Giardia lamblia is a parasite infection in the small intestine caused by Giardia duodenalis. Giardiasis is one of the most common parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal system. This infection can be present in two of the forms, an inactive form is known as a cyst and an active form called a trophozoite. Signs and symptoms are the results of trophozoite attaching to the small intestine lining through a sucker. Infection cannot be spread by this trophozoite as it cannot survive outside the body for a long time, however, the cyst can survive and spreads the infection to others. In this article, we will be learning about the Giardiasis, its causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and herbal treatment.
Giardia infection or Giardiasis is a disease of intestines that is manifested by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and nausea. Giardia intestinalis is the cause of the infection. This tiny parasite is found everywhere in the world which has the unhygienic conditions and unclean water to drink. Hence, the parasite enters the human body through water and contaminated food and spread infection. The infected person passes the cyst of the parasite in the feces which contaminates food or water or through direct fecal-oral route infects other persons coming in contact. Recreational sources of water like water parks and swimming pools are also a big source of spreading this infection through contaminated water
Signs and Symptoms:
Signs and symptoms start to develop in the person after 1-3 weeks of being infected. These complaints usually last from two to six weeks of time and some common one is:
- Floating greasy stools
- Cramps in the stomach or abdomen
- Upset stomach
- Loss of weight
- Foul-smelling stools
Giardiasis is spread through the contaminated food and water and fecal-oral route through which parasite or cyst enters the body and causes infection. Cysts have hard coverings around them which allows them to live for a long period outside the body floating on water or lying on food. When you come in contact with this cyst or directly the parasite (less common) than infection occurs. You may come in contact through:
- Close contact with the infected person.
- Eating without washing hands after touching contaminated surfaces like washroom handles, toys, changing tables, etc.
- Drinking untreated contaminated water like from a stream or lake or from unhygienic places
- While swimming you might swallow the parasite present in contaminated water.
- Eating raw contaminated food.
- Visiting areas where the Giardiasis is comm
Diagnosing Giardiasis is not difficult. It can be tested by giving your stool sample to the lab for checking the presence of a parasite or cyst of Giardiasis in it. For confirming do this for several consecutive days and after having treated also go for the test to confirm that the infection is gone.
Some people infected with Giardiasis can be fine without any medications but it is always better to go for medical care in order to prevent any complication or reoccurrence of the condition. Generally, Metronidazole, tinidazole, and nitazoxanide are used to treat giardiasis infection.
