Ayurvedic Treatment of Testicular Atrophy

Introduction

Testicular atrophy can be described as a condition of shrinking of testicles in males. Testicles are the two male reproductive glands present in the scrotum. The main function of the scrotum includes the regulation of the temperature around the area of testicles. The scrotum does its work by shrinking in response to cold temperatures and doing relaxation in response to warm sensations. These responses can make you feel like your testicles are smaller or larger than normal sometimes.

Testicular Atrophy

But the testicular atrophy is a condition of shrinkage in the testicles, not in the scrotum. This condition can occur due to various factors such as an injury, extreme exposure to chemicals, or an underlying condition.

Symptoms

The major sign and symptoms of testicular atrophy include the shrinkage of one or both the testicles. While some other symptoms can also be observed depending upon the age of the patient.

Signs and Symptoms Before Puberty

For the patients who didn’t achieve puberty, the additional symptoms of testicular atrophy involve the reduced or no development of secondary sexual characteristics like:

  • Pubic hair
  • Facial hair
  • Larger penis size

Signs and Symptoms After Puberty

For the patients who achieved puberty, additional signs and symptoms of testicular atrophy include:

  • Softer testicles
  • Decreased or no growth of pubic hairs
  • Decreased or no growth of facial hairs
  • Reduced muscle mass
  • Infertility
  • Low sex drive

Causes

The main cause of testicular atrophy is Orchitis, which refers to the inflammation of the testicles. The main symptoms of orchitis are swelling and painful sensation in the testicles along with fever and nausea. The swelling in the testicles can make them look larger. The condition of Orchitis can eventually give rise to the testicular atrophy.

Mainly Orchitis is classified into two categories

  • Viral Orchitis: This type of orchitis is commonly caused by mumps virus. About one in the three males suffering from the mumps after puberty have to face orchitis. This condition can develop within four to seven days of being affected with the mumps.
  • Bacterial Orchitis: Bacterial orchitis usually develops due to sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. While in some cases, bacterial orchitis occurs due to an infection in the urinary tract or by having a catheter or medical equipment inserted into the penis.

Some other causes other than orchitis developing the testicular atrophy include:

  1. Age: As women undergo menopause, similarly men go through a process called andropause. In this condition, levels of testosterone decrease which can further lead to testicular atrophy.
  2. Testicular Torsion: When a testicle rotates and twists the spermatic cord, testicular torsion happens. The spermatic cord is a blood vessel transporting the blood to the scrotum. But the twisted spermatic cord becomes less capable of supplying the blood into testicles and this condition causes pain as well as swelling in the testicles. If proper treatment is not taken at the right time, it can cause permanent testicular atrophy.
  3. Varicoceles: A varicocele is similar to the varicose vein, but it is located near to the testicles whereas the varicose vein is present in the legs. Varicoceles mainly show its effect in the left testicles and can give damage to the sperm-producing tubules present inside the testicles. This process can make the affected testicle small in size.
  4. Alcohol addiction: Excess intake of alcohol reduces the testosterone level as well as causes damage to the testicular tissue. So, alcohol can also give rise to testicular atrophy.
  5. Anabolic steroid or estrogen use: Prolonged use of anabolic steroids and estrogen supplements can also cause testicular atrophy.

Risk Factors

The factors increasing the risk of being affected with testicular atrophy are:

  1. Family history of testicular cancer
  2. An undescended testicle
  3. HIV infection
  4. Carcinoma in situ of the testicle
  5. Suffered through testicular cancer before

Diagnosis

When you visit a doctor’s clinic, he may ask you some questions regarding your sexual history and lifestyle. This will help the doctor in understanding if a sexually transmitted infection or alcohol is responsible for the testicular atrophy.

The doctor may also do a physical examination of the testicles, check their size, firmness, and texture. Several tests would be also prescribed by the doctor for a better understanding of the patient’s condition. These tests may be:

  1. Testosterone level test
  2. Complete blood count
  3. Testicular ultrasound
