Ocular Surface Disease Treatment in Ayurveda

Abstract

The eye is the sensitive part of our body which is sensitive to images, light, pain and touch also. The surface of the eye consists of the cornea and the conjunctiva. The layer which covers these surfaces is called the epithelium. In ocular surface disease, the covering of surfaces (epithelium) is damaged. The damage of epithelium may occur from some conditions of the eyes and the eyelids. In this article, we are going to discuss the causes, symptoms and treatment of ocular surface disease.

Ocular Surface Disease

Introduction

In ocular surface disease, damage to the surface layer of the eye is involved. The surface of the eye consists of the cornea and the conjunctiva, frequently present with the symptoms of redness of the eyes, swelling of the lid and photophobia. The conjunctival and corneal surfaces are extra sensitive. Chronic disorders of the ocular surface alter the tear film and lead to a complaint of the heaviness of the eyes.

1. Dry Eyes

In this condition, eyes do not form enough tears and do not form functional tears. This can cause eye infections and damage to the eye surface.

2. BLEPHARITIS

When eyelids become inflamed it is called blepharitis because clogged oil ducts are present near the base of your eyelashes.

3. Neurotrophic Keratitis

It is a degenerative condition caused by nerve impairment and reduces the sensitivity of the cornea.

4. Ocular Rosacea

Ocular rosacea is a type of rosacea which affects the eyes, causing burning, redness and itching.

5. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

In meibomian gland dysfunction, the meibomian glands are not producing sufficient oil.

Symptoms of Ocular Surface Disease

There are different symptoms of different types

1. Dry eyes

  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Burning feeling in eyes
  • Stringy mucus in or around eyes

2. Blepharitis

  • Crusted eyes
  • Itchy, red or swollen eyelids
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Frequent blinking

3. Neurotrophic keratitis

  • Blurred vision
  • Dry or red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

4. Ocular rosacea

  • Red or swollen eyes
  • Dilated blood vessels on the whites of the eyes
  • Frequent eye infection
  • Red, watery, itchy or dry eyes

5. Meibomian gland dysfunction

  • Watery eyes
  • Redness
  • Light sensitivity
  • Stye and chalazion
  • Blurry vision

Diagnosis

  • Comprehensive eye exam
  • Schirmer test – to measure the volume of the tear
  • Osmolarity test – to measure the composition of the eyes
  • Dye test – to test the surface condition of the eyes
  • Magnetic resonance imaging

Ayurvedic Aspect of Ocular Surface Disease

In ayurveda, eye diseases are correlated with Netra roga. Eyes are called netra in ayurveda and are dominated by fire elements and pitta dosha. Aggravation of pitta dosha causes netra roga.

SAMPRAPTI (PATHOPHYSIOLOGY) OF NETRA ROGA (EYE DISEASE)

According to Acharya Sushruta:- (सु. उ.त. १/२०)

The vitiated vata doshas propagate through the channels of sira-dhamani towards the utthamangam (Siras-head) and into the eyes and produce dreadful diseases in the eyes.

Nidana (Causes) of Netra Rog

According to Acharya Sushruta:- (सु. उ.त. १/२६-२७)

  • Drinking cool water immediately after exposure to heat, because of immediate opposite exposures the eye muscles affects and causes eye diseases.
  • Abnormal sleeping habits like- day sleeping causes kapha vitiation and night arousal causes vata and pitta vitiation
  • Excessive anger
  • Grief
  • Continuous weeping
  • Stress suffering pain
  • Minute irritative injuries or contusion injuries cause a great loss to the eyes
  • Indulging more sexual intercourse
  • Excessive sudation to the eyes is contraindicated to the eyes because it causes pittaj raktaj disorder of the eye
  • Shuktha, arnala, amla, kulutha and masha if taken excessively causes eye disorder because they having the alcoholic properties which are quite opposite to ojas (immunity)
  • Eye either exposing to smoke leads to eye disorder
  • Protrusion of the eyeball may be caused by excessive indulging in vamana therapy.
  • Suppressing the vomiting urge causes visual problems and eye strain
  • Suppressing the tears
  • Observing the minute things regularly causes strain to the ciliary muscles and lens

Pooravroop of Netra Rog

According to Acharya Sushruta:- (सु. उ.त. १/२१-२३)

  • Sticking of eyelids due to organized discharges
  • Angry look with watering of eyes
  • Burning sensation
  • Dirty eye with discharges
  • Heaviness of lids
  • Itching sensation
  • Pricking pain
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Hyperaemia
  • Pain in the eyelids
  • Visual disturbance
  • Difficulty in opening and closing the lids and improper visualization

Treatment of Netra Roga

According to Acharya Sushruta

सङ् क्षेपतः क्रियायोगो निदान परिवर्जनम। वातादीनां प्रतिघातः प्रोक्तो विस्तरत: पुनः।। (सु. उ.त. १/२५)

Nidan parivarjana – Avoidance of causative factors of eye disease.

Product Description

1. Angel Eye Vitale

Angel eye vitale is a polyherbal capsule which is formulated by Planet Ayurveda by using Amla (Emblica officinalis), Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) and Bhringraj (Eclipta alba). These herbs help in increasing muscle health. It is helpful for eye diseases. It helps provide nourishment to the eyes. It also removes dark circles.

Dosage- 1 capsule twice daily.

2. Saptamrit Loha

Saptamrit loha is a polyherbal tablet which is formulated by Planet Ayurveda by using Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Amla (Emblica officinale), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Lauh bhasma (Iron ash).
