Primary hyperaldosteronism or Conn’s syndrome is among the common causes of hypertension which leads to abnormal secretion of aldosterone. What is Conn’s Syndrome?
Adrenal glands are small pair of glands located on top of each kidney that produce hormones like cortisol, aldosterone and epinephrine which is one of the sex hormones. Conn is caused due to the overproduction of aldosterone hormone which is responsible for maintaining potassium and salts levels in the blood. Increased sodium reabsorption by the kidneys which causes plasma volume expansion that ultimately leads to hypertension in a person.
Epidemiology of Conn’s Syndrome
Conn’s syndrome is also known as Primary hyperaldosteronism mostly affects females than males and occurs in almost 6% to 20% individuals with hypertension globally.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Conn’s Syndrome?
Some of the common symptoms of Conn’s syndrome are as follows-
- Lack of muscle strength
- Weak eyesight
- Sudden muscle cramps
- Increased thirst
- Fluctuating blood pressure
- Frequent urge to urinate
What are the Causes of the Conn’s Syndrome?
Excess aldosterone production is caused due to the cardio-vascular disorders, liver diseases, pregnancy, kidney tumors, trauma etc. Moreover hypertension, high blood pressure and lower potassium levels generally cause Conn’s syndrome. In some cases, benign cortical adenoma and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia triggers the production of aldosterone. Sometimes Conn’s syndrome can be caused due to the genetic factors, this type is termed as glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism.

- Individual with first or second-degree hypertension
- Resistant hypertension
- Diuretic-induced hypokalemia
- Person with a family history of onset of hypertension

Conn’s syndrome can be diagnosed clinically and can be confirmed by the following tests-
- Captopril challenge test
