Introduction
What is kidney disease? A very frequent question asked. Kidney diseases are a group of conditions that are typically affecting kidneys. Such conditions affect either one or both of the kidneys simultaneously and are responsible for decreased life expectancy. In case of dogs, if any type of kidney disease can be diagnosed earlier and is treated aggressively then your dog can fully recover. Dogs usually suffer from acute renal failure and chronic renal failure. There are many reasons responsible for this and below is the description to all you want to know about renal disease or kidney disease in dogs.
Causes of kidney diseases in Dogs
The causes of kidney diseases in dogs are many. But the most common causes are mentioned below:
- Damaged kidney filters due to infections
- Infection of kidney tissues resulting in inflammation, causing acute renal injury
- Presence of kidney stones, which can cause blockage in urethral blockage or also can put pressure on various cells of kidneys if its size is large.
- Kidney blockage which can be due to kidney stones or also due to urethral stricture. Resulting in narrowing of passage, if old urine can not pass through the urinary system and the new keeps on forming then it’s obvious there is backflow of the urine.
- Toxin accumulation is due to NSAIDS and common OTC medication
- Hereditary, is one of the causes as well. Sometimes such conditions run in a particular breed or in a particular family of dogs.
Types of kidney disease in dogs
The types include two situations:
- Acute renal failure
- Chronic renal failure
Acute renal failure
Acute renal failure is most caused by consumption of toxins in dogs. Acute renal failure means that kidneys fail in an otherwise healthy dog. The condition develops in a few days and can cause a dog to go normal to sick in a very short period. The toxins which can cause this situation are human painkillers, antifreeze or engine coolant due to its sweet taste, rat poison especially the one that is containing the chemical cholecalciferol. In addition, a prolonged urinary tract infection can also result in acute renal failure. This type can also be due to decreased oxygen delivery to the kidneys like in trauma, severe dehydration and heatstroke.
Chronic renal failure
Chronic renal failure is a condition which is not immediate but grows gradually with time. It is responsible for degenerative changes in the kidney bilaterally and hence hampers its ability to function properly. It is mostly found in ageing dogs and obviously develops gradually. The kidney function becomes worse over time and eventually leads to death.
Symptoms of renal disease and renal failure in dogs
Chronic kidney disease, as mentioned above grows with time and on the other hand acute renal failure will develop quickly like in days. So the renal disease can have following symptoms in both conditions:
- Drinking too much and producing too much amounts of water
- General depression which is due to raised waste products in the blood.
- Weakness caused by low levels of potassium in the blood
- Increased volumes of urine in the bladder.
- Blood in urine
- Lethargy along with significant weight loss
- Mouth ulcers
- Pale discoloration of gums
- Drunken behaviour can be seen usually defined by uncoordinated movement like stumbling.
- Significant decrease in appetite
- Ammoniacal smelling breath
- Vomiting (recurrent)
Diagnosing renal failure or kidney disease in dogs
The conditions are diagnosed using two basic tests:
- Complete urinalysis to rule out kidney functioning
- Complete blood test along with kidney function tests to rule out
Treatment of renal failure or kidney disease in dogs
Fluid therapy, therapeutic diets along with medications and supplements especially the phosphorus binders so that phosphorus absorption in the body can be decreased. With all these antacids are also given along with antiemetics to control vomiting.
