Ayurvedic View
In Ayurveda, ulcerative colitis mimics a number of conditions such as raktatisar, grahani, raktaja arsha, raktaja pravahika. Ayurvedic formulations such as parpati, dadimashtaka churna, bilwadi avaleha, takrarishta, anuvasana basti and picha basti are generally helpful in this condition. Acharya Charak has called the digestive system as mahasrota. Generally, the condition is caused by improper diet (salty and spicy) for a long run. That results in the formation of ama (toxins) instead of proper rasa dhatu. This ama formation obstructs micro channels of the body and vitiates pitta dosha. Pitta dosha also elevates by eating food with hot potency. Pitta vitiation causes diarrhea (pitta atisar) and inflammation of the colon. When pitta vitiates rakta (blood), it results in bleeding in the colon resulting in rakta atisar. Hence,Pitta Atisar leading to Rakta atisar is possible correlation with ulcerative colitis.
