How to Raise Platelet Counts of a Child Below 5 years age
The health of every child is very important. It is the job of every parent to take care of the child from the day they are born. The first few years of the baby are very crucial as they involve the development of the child both physically and mentally. It is very important to build their immunity and provide them proper nutrition. Kids are much more vulnerable to disease as compared to Adults and react differently. Even the little flu is sometimes very dangerous to them. Just like adults, it is important for kids to have a normal platelet count because a low platelet count can lead to health complications in children. In this article, we are going to throw light on the importance of platelets in children and how we can naturally increase the levels of platelets through the use of herbal remedies.
Platelets are blood cells that help in clotting and the normal range for every child is counted between 250,000 – 450,000 per microliter of blood. Bone marrow is responsible for the production of Platelet and along with that WBC and RBC are also produced.
Its main function is to stop bleeding and form clotting. Whenever the blood vessels get damaged due to injury the platelets then rush to the affected area forming a clot to stop the damage. The platelet count when falls down below 10,000 is considered to be dangerous in children and creates other health complications. One of the disorders caused by low platelet count is ITP (Immune thrombocytopenia) mostly seen in Children.
What is ITP?
This is the disorder when the bone marrow produces a fewer number of platelets. ITP is a bleeding disorder when the body stops to form a clot due to the production of certain types of antibodies produced by the immune system.
Symptoms Seen In Children with ITP
Purple spots appear on the skin which is very commonly seen in kids with ITP.
You might commonly see bruising on their skin without any reason. These bruises are commonly seen on the knees and elbows.
- Tiny red spots might also appear on the skin.
- Epistaxis (Bleeding from Nose)
- Easily bleeding from mouth and gums.
- Blood while passing stool and urine.
- Heavy bleeding due to some injury which can be life-threatening to them.
- Weakness and Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
Causes For ITP In Children
The main cause for ITP is still not known but it is believed that the immune system is the main cause to develop the disorder. The antibodies present in the body due to some infection start to attack the body resulting in destroying the platelets. There are some risk factors which include:-
- Viral infection like flu.
- Weak Immune system.
- Specific medications or vaccination.
Diagnosis For ITP
The medical history of the patient is very important along with the physical examination. Other clinical investigations that can be done are:-
- CBC (Complete blood count): This will tell the number of platelets present in the blood. It will also determine the levels of White and Red blood cells.
- Bone Marrow Aspiration: This is done very rarely but rules out the abnormal levels of cells present in the marrow causing ITP.
- Peripheral Smear: A blood sample is examined under the microscope and to check whether they are normal or not.
Treatment For ITP In Children
The modern methods include giving steroids, immune injection, or drugs for boosting platelet. All this will lead to much more complications in children which will put an impact on your health and the damage sometimes can be long-lasting.
In Ayurveda, ITP is considered as the Triyaga Raktapitta where all the three Dosha are violated. Ayurveda treats the patient by providing herbs that contain anti-coagulative and anti-neoplastic properties.
Ayurvedic herbs due to their property will reduce the Sangrahi (astringent) factor and help in increasing Balya (strength). Helping the child by naturally increasing the number of platelets without causing any side effects.
