Abstract

Achalasia cardia is a disorder of the esophagus where a person is unable to swallow food or even liquids due to the contraction of lower esophageal sphincters. In this article, we will discuss the root cause, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, management strategy, and treatment aspect as per Ayurveda which is a safe method and resolves the disease from its root and even averts the chance of its recurrence.

Introduction

Achalasia cardia is a condition that affects the esophagus. It is a disorder where the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter get affected and unable to relax during deglutition. It is very difficult to swallow anything because the peristaltic movement got affected. And the main reason is not the muscle contraction but it is the nerve affection that got damaged or impaired. So, it’s difficult to pass food and fluid from the mouth into the stomach. The incidence ratio of this disease is high in old aged and middle-aged people and in those who are suffering from any Autoimmune disorder.

Achalasia Cardia

As per Ayurveda, it is an Annavaha Srotas Vyadhi which affects Anna Nalika. Here, it is a Vata Pradhan Tridoshaj Vyadhi where especially Vata dosha is a prime culprit. Vata is responsible for all kinds of movements in our body so this peristalsis of the esophagus also depends on it. Also, the nerve signals which are impaired are mainly dependent on Vata. So, if we can establish the equilibrium in between all three doshas we can get over this disease.

Causes of Achalasia Cardia

The main cause of this disease is our affected immune system. Due to autoimmune conditions, our own body’s immune system starts attacking the healthy cells and develops this condition.
Any damage to our nerves which supplies the lower sphincter of the esophagus is the cause of this disease.

Excessive indulgence in activities that aggravate Vata dosha in our body is responsible for this condition such as excessive consumption of dry, hard, and cold foodstuffs,  excessive exposure to cold environments. Any associated disease history of the esophagus is responsible for this condition. And the presence of any autoimmune disease may be responsible for this disease.
Long term use of any steroids may affect any organ, so it could be a reason for this disease.

Triggering factors of this disease

Alcohol consumption in excess weakens our nerves is a triggering factor in this condition, Cold weather is also a triggering factor.

Signs and Symptoms of Achalasia Cardia

The various signs and symptoms of this disease are –

  1. Difficulty in swallowing i.e nothing but dysphagia, usually the person who is suffering is having achalasia hardly engulf anything even feels difficulty in drinking water.
  2. Vomiting because food is unable to reach the stomach, our body as reflux vomits it out as a foreign material.
  3. Irritation, pain, and discomfort in the chest region as food stuck in the esophagus itself.
  4. Heartburn, sometimes there is a burning sensation in the chest region.
  5. Weakness, due to lack of nutrition, the person becomes weak and feels tired.

Diagnosis

Usually, by symptoms, we can suspect this disease but confirmation is required as the symptoms are quite similar to some other problems of the upper GI tract, so diagnosis can be made based on the following tests.

  • Barium swallow
  • Endoscopy
  • Esophageal manometry
  • Treatment

Till now modern science tackles this disease by dilating the lower sphincter or by esophagomyotomy. These both surgical interventions may lead to post complications like a tear of sphincter while dilatation and GERD after esophagomyotomy. Even Botox injections are used for this treatment. Which are not safe. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine has an effective treatment for this condition, which is now in practice and people are getting good relief from them. Let’s go through the treatment aspect as per Ayurveda.
