Herbal Management of Hypophosphatemia(Electrolyte Disorder)

ABSTRACT

Hypophosphatemia is the condition characterized by a decreased level of serum potassium below the level of 2.5 mg/dl. A lower level of phosphate in serum is caused due to the decreased intake of it, increased loss of it, or as a result of phosphate cellular shift. There can be many causes of Hypophosphatemia and evaluate if a thorough physical examination, case history, and laboratory tests are required. Hypophosphatemia can be secondary to disease in which intestinal absorption of the phosphate is decreased. The main aim of treatment is to treat the underlying cause of Hypophosphatemia and correct the deficiency. Here, we will be learning about the condition called Hypophosphatemia, its causes, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, and herbal management by remedies offered by Planet Ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION

The normal concentration of phosphate in serum is 3.4- 4.5 mg/dl which keeps on fluctuating in different age groups, and as per the dietary intake. When this level goes below 2.5 mg/dl, it is known as Hypophosphatemia. As phosphorous is a compound that is abundantly present in the common diet we take, Hypophosphatemia due to poor intake is very uncommon. However, if a person is severely and for a long time malnourished or sick, it can cause the condition. A person suffering from chronic diarrhea or undergone certain surgery can also have malabsorption of phosphate resulting in Hypophosphatemia. However chronic alcoholism is the most common cause of it as more than half of the chronic alcoholic patients are found to be Hypophosphatemic when there occurs withdrawal of alcohol in their body.

Hypophosphatemia

CAUSES

Hypophosphatemia can be caused by a number of reasons and some of the major ones are listed below:

  • Chronic alcoholism- It is found that when the chronic alcoholic people get admitted to hospital and they are not able to eat properly due to some ailment they are suffering from and also the alcohol withdrawal occurs, 50% of them develops the Hypophosphatemia
  • Chronic malabsorption due to the disease condition where the person is having diarrhea or intestinal absorption is reduced, Hypophosphatemia occurs
  • Increased excretion of phosphorus- This can occur in various conditions like vitamin D deficiency, primary hyperparathyroidism, rickets (Vitamin D dependent and vitamin D resistant), oncogenic osteomalacia, and hyperglycemic states
  • Severe burns
  • Very few cases occur due to poor diet as phosphorus is present in every other food we take in daily routine
  • Hereditary and acquired conditions leading to increased phosphorus losses or excretion
  • Hypophosphatemia due to cellular shifts

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Hypophosphatemia may vary in the severity and duration and the signs and symptoms varies as per that. The patients who are having a low or moderate level of the deficiency are usually asymptomatic while those patients having Hypophosphatemia for a long time and severe in level can have various complaints like:

  • Pain in bones
  • Metabolic encephalopathy
  • Low strength and weakness of muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Mental confusion
  • Easy bone fractures
  • Loss of appetite
  • Decaying of teeth or late teeth eruptions in babies
  • Children having a slow growth rate and short heights as compared to the other children of their age
  • Seizures
  • Progressive encephalopathy
  • Coma

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is very easy by directly going for the serum phosphate level. On evaluating all the points including clinical presentation, history and lab result your doctor can easily make a diagnosis about Hypophosphatemia. However, after knowing about the ailments (Hypophosphatemia), it is a must to know the cause so that the condition can be treated successfully and completely. It can be assessed as per the ailment one is suffering from.

Treatment of Hypophosphatemia

The main aim of treatment here should be to first of all to treat the underlying cause of Hypophosphatemia, secondly, the patient should be given the oral replacement of phosphate, and if the deficiency is very severe the level of phosphate is low even from <1 mg/dl then the IV phosphate should be given to compensate the condition.

This was the modern method of treatment, however, the Indian traditional system of medicine, i.e. Ayurveda can also help in treating Hypophosphatemia that too naturally and safely. Herbs given in this system of medicine helps in balancing the humor or doshas of the body which is the cause of all the ailments and then restores the health by eradicating the root cause of the disease.
