Can MOG Antibody disease Managed Through Ayurveda?

Abstract

The field of Central nervous system and other neurological diseases is very much vivid out of which demyelinating disease is any disease in which the myelin sheath of the nerves is damaged. These diseases can be caused by infectious agents, autoimmune conditions, genetically inherited or other factors. One new condition  associated with pathogenic serum antibodies against MOG. The features of this disease may overlap with aquaporin-4 antibody neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders but can be distinguished from the condition of multiple sclerosis. In this article we’re going to discuss this MOG Antibody disease, along with the best Ayurvedic treatment for the disease.

Introduction

MOG Antibody disease is a neuro-inflammatory auto-immune disorder that preferably causes inflammation in the optic nerve, or other nerves/structures associated with CNS due to lack or attack on the glycoprotein MOG by body’ own antibodies. Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a necessary adhesion molecule to provide structural integrity to the myelin sheath of the neuron and thus this glycoprotein is an important unit in the myelination of nerves. MOG related diseases range from classical neuromyelitis optica to  cortical encephalitis  and acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis.

Sign and Symptoms MOG Antiboy Disease

Sign and Symptoms

The antibodies to MOG damage the integrity of the myelin sheath (demyelination) which resist in neurotransmission along the neurons that leads to various neurological manifestations. As discussed earlier this disease preferably affects the optic nerve so the clinical features include blurring in the vision, painful eye movements, loss of color vision, which ultimately leads to complete loss of vision (rare), other systemic manifestations include unsteadiness, extreme lethargy or tiredness, nausea and vomiting, weakness of upper and lower limbs, bowel/bladder problems, and pain in back.

Causes

MOG Antibody disease is the disorder of unknown etiology i.e. the exact cause of the disease is not known. But this disease is believed to be linked to an abnormal immune system response to MOG protein affecting the central nervous system. Further, non-familial inheritance pattern is being followed by the disease associated with the disorders related with MOG antibody.

Ayurvedic Aspect

The various neurological disorders in Ayurveda are considered to be due to the vitiation of vata dosha. In this disease i.e. MOG Antibody diseases, the autoimmune condition is raised due to the ama (endotoxins) resulting from the incomplete digestion of the food due to mandagni (weakened digestive fire), these ama under the influence of vitiated vata dosha start affecting the body’s immune system, and start attacking the Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein cells in the myelin covering of the neuron of nerves, leading to the various neurological manifestations resolution form the affected nerve.

Conclusion

There is no exact treatment plan for the disease available with the allopathic system of medicine. The focus is mostly symptomatic. The common treatment options available with them are oral steroids, intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP), oral immunosuppressants, plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIGs). These all medications are having multiple adverse effects on the immune system or on the whole body. Whereas the Ayurveda, focus on treating this type of diseases with herbal formulations along with life and dietary changes. And this method is quite effective, relatively having much lesser side-effects, boosting immunity and also reducing the chances of recurrence in case of MOA antibody disorders.
