Ayurvedic Treatment for Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Abstract

Glaucoma is the group of eye conditions that result in damage of the optic eye nerve which can worsen over time. It is linked to the accumulation of pressure inside the eye and this condition often runs in the family. The damaged optic nerve stops sending signals to the brain to form an image. If not treated, glaucoma can result in permanent loss of vision. The severity of glaucoma depends on the type but among them is primary open-angle glaucoma. Through this article, we are going to discuss primary open-angle glaucoma in detail and its management through herbal medicines.

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

What is Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma?

It is simply a type of Glaucoma and is one of the most common forms of glaucoma. More than three million people are affected by primary open-angle glaucoma as is researched by Glaucoma Research Foundation. This type of glaucoma is particularly very dangerous for the eyes because it is not noticed until more damage is done to the eyes. This occurs because in the early stages of the disease there are no symptoms and eventually at the later stage there is vision loss, that is why it is known as “silent theft of sight”

What are the Symptoms?

Primary open-angle glaucoma shows no warning signs or any other painful symptoms. The disease develops slowly and sometimes the disease goes on for many years without any noticeable symptoms.

There are many people who feel fine while developing with open-angle glaucoma and they do not notice any change in their vision. The initial loss of vision is of peripheral or side vision but the sharpness of vision is still maintained until it hits the later stage. By the time the patient becomes aware, they have already lost vision. It is important to notice even the slightest change in the vision.

What are the Causes of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma?

The main cause for Primary open-angle glaucoma is intraocular pressure which is known as the pressure inside the eye which is chronically very high. Due to such high pressure, the optic nerve is damaged present in the back of the eye resulting in permanent vision loss.

The pressure in the eye is controlled by aqueous humor which is the clear part present in our eye. This clear fluid is produced by the ciliary body located behind the colored part of the eye known as Iris.

The aqueous humor goes into the anterior chamber of the eye which is a space between the clear cornea and the iris. It is drained out of the anterior chamber with the help of a drainage angle. This aqueous humor then exits the eye through trabecular meshwork, a mesh-like structure present in the eye.

In a normal human eye, the rate between aqueous fluid produced by the ciliary body and the aqueous outflow at the drainage angle is balanced. This results in normal eye pressure.

In patients with open-angle glaucoma, the exiting amount of aqueous fluid in the drainage angle is less than the amount of fluid produced by the ciliary body resulting in increased pressure of the eye.

Risk Factors

There are many factors responsible for causing open-angle glaucoma

  • Age: – The risk of developing open-angle glaucoma is increased after the age of 40year.
  • Race: – It can affect any race but is mostly seen in people who are African American or Latin American.
  • Medications: – People who have taken steroids or a certain type of medicine for a long time have a high risk of developing open-angle glaucoma.
  • Health Problems: – People who have medical conditions like low blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes have a greater risk of developing open-angle glaucoma.
  • Family History: – People whose parents or siblings are affected with glaucoma are five times more at risk of having the disease.
  • Lifestyle: – According to some research people who smoke and have an excessive intake of alcohol are also at high risk.

What Diagnosis Can Be Done in Glaucoma?

The first is to see basic health of the eye through physical examination and other tests include

  • Dilated Eye Examination
  • Visual Field Test
  • OCT Test
