Abstract

Genetic disorder is a disease that is caused by defective genes or mutation in an individual’s DNA sequence. If there is any change in a person’s DNA then it causes genetic abnormalities. These abnormalities cause change in a part or whole DNA sequence. There are various genetic disorders such as down syndrome, albinism, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, Chaple syndrome etc. In this article we will discuss this disease named Chaple syndrome and its ayurvedic management in detail.

Chaple syndrome is a rare genetic disorder of the immune system. It stands for CD55 deficiency and with hyperactivation of angiopathic thrombosis and severe protein losing enteropathy (PLE). This disease occurs in childhood and can be a life threatening condition.

Beejdosha (genetic deformity) totally depends on which part of the beejabhaga (genes and chromosomes) are affected. According to that, the offspring are developed. If there is not any deformity then a perfectly fine offspring is produced by the affected parents. So both the things are seen that children might be like their parents or not. Acharya said that indriya (senses) are atmaja and its presence or absence totally depends on the poorva janma krit karma (past deeds). That’s why the offspring might be affected or not.

Etiology/Causes

It is caused by deleterious mutations in the CD55 gene. It is a primary autosomal recessive inherited condition. Child inherited the copies of the defective gene from both the parents which results in homozygous defects.

Clinical features/Signs and Symptoms

The patient shows following symptoms:

• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Edema
• Deficiency in iron, calcium, magnesium, vit-D and vit- B12 (due to chronic malabsorption)

Diagnosis

• Doctor will do a thorough examination for diagnosing this disease. In blood investigation, there is Hypoproteinemia (due to severe protein losing enteropathy). These patients are generally diagnosed through clinical presentation, histology and genetic testing.
• Histopathological report suggests that there is extensive lymphangiectasia (pathological dilatation of lymph vessels.
