Causes of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenital Disorder (AMC)
The specific cause(s) of AMC is not yet diagnosed by the medical professionals. But, it is suspected that it is majorly related to the reduced movement of the fetal during development of the body, which may be due to many reasons. The reduced fetal movement or no fetal movement for a period of time may lead to the growth of an extra connective tissue around the joint fixing it in place, as it might be at that time. Lack of the joint movements also indicates that the tendons that are connected to the joints are unable to stretch to their normal length which results in the difficult motion of the affected part. The causes for this decreased fetal movement can be any one or more from the below mentioned:
- Muscle Disease of the mother, maternal fever during pregnancy, viral infection that may damage the
cells, etc. may lead to the abnormal muscle development of the baby in uterus.
- Limited or insufficient space in the uterus for natural movement. It may happen when multiple fetuses
- Improper blood supply to the fetus
- Abnormal or Malformation of the central nervous system i.e., the brain or the spinal cord. In such
conditions, AMC accompanies a number of other symptoms too.
- Abnormal development of the tendons, joints, bones or joint linings.
It cannot be considered as inherited in most cases, but in some a genetic cause can be identified. In some cases, both the genetic and environmental factors are responsible for causing AMC.
