Ayurvedic Management for Mitral Valve Prolapse

Abstract

Mitral valve prolapse is valvular heart disease. Mitral valve is also known as the bicuspid valve. Mitral valve is one of the heart’s four valves and prevents blood from flowing back to the atrium. It is located on the left side of the heart between the left atrium and the left ventricle. In this pathway oxygenated blood flows into the left atrium from the pulmonary vein. When the left atrium is filled with the blood then this valve helps in throwing the blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle. In a normal heart, this valve is then closed to prevent blood from flowing back into the left atrium. But in some conditions, this valve does not function properly and one of the diseases of this mitral valve is mitral valve prolapse. So in this article, we are going to discuss mitral valve prolapse and its Ayurvedic management.

Introduction

Mitral valve prolapse is the condition which is characterized by the displacement of the mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium. This is the common cause of the heart murmur caused by a leaky heart valve. This condition arises when the two flaps of the mitral valve do not close smoothly and bulge upward into the left atrium. This is also called click-murmur syndrome. This disease can develop at any age but serious symptoms of mitral valve prolapse tend to occur in men older than 50 years of age. This disease is also caused by conditions in which cartilage is abnormal (connective tissue disease).

Mitral Valve Prolapse

Etiology/Causes

The cause of this disease is not known exactly, but it is thought to be linked to heredity. It is thought that mitral valve leaflets have extra tissue or stretch more than normal. This causes them to bulge out like a parachute. This bulging may keep the mitral valve from closing tightly. Other possible causes are:

  • Scarring of the flaps
  • Lengthening or thinning of the chordae tendineae
  • Fibrin deposits on the flaps
  • Ischemic damage

Clinical features/Signs and symptoms

People with this disease often have no symptoms. But if symptoms are arising then those symptoms are

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in the legs and feet
  • Tingling sensation in the hands and feet

Risk Factors

It can run in families and may be linked to other conditions. It may also become a risk factor for the patient. Those other conditions are:

  • Marfan syndrome
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
  • Epstein anomaly
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Grave’s disease
  • Scoliosis
  • Polycystic kidney disease

Complications

It may sometimes land into some complications and those are:

  • Mitral valve regurgitation
  • Arrhythmias
  • Endocarditis (heart valve infections)

Diagnosis

As we discussed above, mitral valve prolapse often has no symptoms. It is discovered during a routine examination or if the symptoms arise. Some of the tests to detect this disease are:

  • ECG (Electrocardiogram)
  • ECHO (Echocardiogram)
  • Stress test or treadmill test
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Cardiac MRI
  • Coronary angiogram
