Alternative Treatment of Syphilis ( Sexually transmitted disease)

ABSTRACT

Sexually transmitted disease is one of the most common problems which is faced by people and most people feel shy to talk about it. Some people feel shy to talk about it or discuss and some do not even visit doctors which is the wrong thing. These types of infections can even result in an adverse effect on the body like infertility or reduced sexual desires. One of these STDs is syphilis which a bacterial infection and not treating it can lead to life-threatening situations. Today, in this article we are going to discuss Syphilis in detail and its management through herbal medicines.

INTRODUCTION

Syphilis painless bacterial type infection which spreads through sexual contact and is mostly seen in body parts like the mouth, rectum, or genitals. It spreads from one person to another via mucous membrane or skin with sores. In the early stages, syphilis can remain inactive for years and does not show symptoms, and can be easily cured through injection of penicillin. Once syphilis becomes active and left without treatment, the disease causes damage to the brain, heart, and other organs eventually resulting in death. This disease can spread from mother to unborn children.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SYPHILIS

The symptoms depend on the stages of the disease and it may take years for the patient to notice the signs. This includes:-

1. Primary Stage

This is the first stage where small sores appear anywhere on the body.  The appearance of a sore is the sign that the bacteria have entered the body and in this stage, most people only develop one sore. There is a chance the symptoms might get developed within five weeks after exposure to the disease. Most people do not notice them because they are painless and they might be present in the vagina or rectum which is not noticed.

2. Secondary stage

After weeks after the sores start to heal the patient might experience a rash that starts from the trunk and then covers the whole body and sometimes even the soles of the feet or palms of the hands. These rashes are painless and do not cause itching but can be accompanied by swollen lymph nodes. The patient might also experience pain in muscles, sore throat, hair loss, and fever. This may disappear within a few weeks and may reappear.

3. Latent stage

If the patient is left untreated then this may move to the hidden stage where symptoms are not presented in the patient. This then progresses to the tertiary stage.

4. Tertiary stage

15 to 30 percent of the people when left untreated will develop complications and this stage is also known as the later stage. This results in damage to the heart, blood vessels, joints, eyes, nerves, brain, bones, and liver.

5. Neurosyphilis

In this stage, the infection can spread to the brain, causing damage to the eye known as ocular syphilis and the nervous system called neurosyphilis.

There are chances that it may spread to unborn children from their mother through the placenta. Most newborn babies with congenital syphilis show no symptoms but they might show some signs like rashes on their soles or palms. In later stages, they will develop teeth deformities, deafness, and saddle nose.

Complications

Syphilis also increases the risk of developing HIV infection and complications during pregnancy. This includes:-

  • Small bumps:-These bumps are known as gummas which develop on bones, skin, liver, and other organs of the body. They commonly disappear after they have been given antibiotics.
  • Cardiovascular problem:-Syphilis can result in an aneurysm or inflammation of the aorta resulting in damage of heart valves.
  • Neurological problems:-This may include symptoms like Stroke, headache, meningitis, dementia, impotency, urinary incontinence, blindness, etc.
  • HIV infection:- People especially adults who have got syphilis or any genital ulcers through sexual contact are at higher risk of developing HIV and these syphilis sores can bleed easily.
  • Pregnancy:- Congenital syphilis increases the risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.

CAUSES FOR SYPHILIS

It is caused due to bacterial infection called Treponema pallidum and one of the main routes of transmission is through sexual contact. The bacteria can also enter through abrasions or cuts on the skin. Both primary and secondary stages are the most contagious and can easily spread from one person to the other. There are fewer chances that the bacteria spread through infected mother to unborn child. It does not spread through the use of the same bathtub, toilet, swimming, or hot tubs. If cured once then there is a chance that it can reoccur.

Risk factors:- The chances of acquiring syphilis increases in people:-

  • Perform sexual intercourse with multiple partners.
  • Unprotected sex.
  • People who are already infected with HIV.

DIAGNOSIS FOR SYPHILIS

  • Blood test:- It will confirm the presence of an antibody that helps in fighting syphilis. If the test comes positive for this specific type of antibody then it is confirmed that the patient has syphilis.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid test:- As already discussed that syphilis causes complications in the nervous system, this test will help in the diagnosis.

TREATMENT

According to modern science, the treatment for syphilis is antibiotics which will help in killing the bacteria. There are still 50-50 chances that you may develop it again and antibiotics are not the permanent cure as it does not remove the root cause of the disease.

According to Allopaths Syphilis is considered “Firanaga rog” and is transmitted sexually. It is further classified on the basis of their complications and symptoms and this includes abhyantar (interior), bahya (exterior), and bahyabhyantar (two folds). Our body is made from three unique elements known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, whereas imbalance of any Dosha results in health complications.

The vitiation of all three doshas causes syphilis, but Kapha dosha is mainly very dominant in the chronic stage. This causes intoxication of the dhatus (tissue) which results in serious complications of the blood vessels, brain, bones, heart, nerves and brain. The main reason for syphilis in Ayurveda is also considered to be weak immunity, and by providing herbal medicine one can naturally increase their immunity
