Treatment of Ehrlichiosis (tick-borne disease) in Ayurveda
Abstract
There are many different types of tick borne disease which affects both animals as well as human beings. It is not important that they spread from one person to the other but if it does then these ticks are the infectious agents. These are usually caused by the pathogens including protozoa, bacteria and viruses. There are chances that the patient might have infection caused by more than one agent. The incidence of tick-borne illness has increased geographically and has been expanding rapidly. In total 16 types of tick-borne disease were discovered and one of them is Ehrlichiosis which is causing bacterial infection. In this article we are going to discuss more about the disease and its treatment through the help of herbal medicine.
What is Ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis is the tick-borne disease which results in flu-like clinical features leading to muscle aches, fever and also headache. It is mainly caused by the bacteria known as Anaplasmataceae and after entering the body it starts to kill the white blood cells. The incubation period of the Ehrlichiosis is 14 days and can be easily treated through antibiotics. If left untreated it can lead to life-threatening and if you want to prevent tick bites then its better using tick repellents. The average incidence of Ehrlichiosis reported is 2.3 per million people per day.
There are four different types of Ehrlichiosis including
- Anaplasma phagocytophilum is usually found in New England.
- Ehrlichia chaffeensis causing human monocytic ehrlichiosis.
- Ehrlichia ewingii causes human ewingii ehrlichiosis mostly affecting the dogs as well as deer.
- Neorickettsia sennetsu
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Ehrlichiosis?
Some of the common clinical features seen in the disease are
- Fever
- Headache
- Chills
- Pains in muscles
- Pain in joints
- Feeling unwell all the time
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
Some of the other signs might also be seen are
- Rash
- Confusion of mind
Complications of the disease
- Kidney failure
- Heart failure
- Respiratory failure
- Seizures
- Severe infection
What causes Ehrlichiosis?
Ehrlichiosis mainly occurred due to different types of ehrlichia bacteria mainly found in Southeastern, south central and eastern coastal states. They black legged ticks which are also known as deer ticks mostly found in the Upper Midwest. These infections spread through the blood as they latch on the host and these ticks swell double of their size. They are found on deer which can easily transfer to a human body resulting in Ehrlichiosis.
Other rare reason for the disease could be blood transfusion
How can Ehrlichiosis be diagnosed?
There are some of the test that can be done to diagnose the disease including
- Blood test which might show low white blood cells or platelet count
- Liver Function Test

Precautions

- Wearing clean gloves or medical gloves are much better.
- Use tweezers to grab them firmly from the mouth or head.
- Pull it carefully from the skin and clean tweezers as well.
- Then put some rubbing alcohol on the tick which will clean them.
- After disposing of them, clean the hands properly with soap.
