COUGH AND CHEST CONGESTION
Someone cough and chest congestion and the remedy or first thing running crashing through the head is to give them a cough syrup. But what if the coughing human being is a small baby, the solution of cough syrup is applicable for adults but can’t be given to a newborn. We are often confused and scared when it comes to giving medicines to small kids, they are so sensitive and giving them medication is to be done with a lot of care.
LET’S KNOW WHAT IS COUGH AND CHEST CONGESTION?
Cough can never be considered a pathological condition but a stimulus to certain irritants that cause irritation in the airways or throat. These irritants in the throat send stimulation through the nerve cells to the brain and from there via different nerves, it sends signals to the muscles in the abdomen and lungs which force it to expel out the irritants from the airways.
Rhinitis and fever are some conditions that lead to another condition called chest congestion. During childhood, there is a predominance of Kapha which increases mucus production and makes it difficult for children to breathe and this even causes a feeling of heaviness.
LET’S KNOW WHAT AYURVEDA HAS TO SAY
As per Ayurveda, every condition is caused when there is an imbalance in the doshas, cough is caused especially when there is an imbalance in the dosha that is Vayu dosha.
कसति शिरः कण्ठादूध्वऺं गच्छति वयुरिती कासः ।
Kasa is a reflex, symptom, complication or an independent disease in which the vayu is expelled from the srothas of shiras through Kantha and swarayantra, producing a sound like khass. Chest congestion is caused when the Pran Vayu.
Kasa is classified into five types based on the predominance of doshas and how it is caused, it may be vataja kasa, pittaja kasa, kaphaja kasa, kshayaja kasa and kshataja kasa. Doshaja kasa is caused when intake of food or activities are done which increases these doshas in the body. Kshaya type is caused due to emaciation and kshataja when there is an injury.
SYMPTOMS OF COUGH AND CHEST CONGESTION
Certain symptoms that indicate that our babies are having difficulty and are feeling heavy due to chest congestion are fever, difficulty in breathing, headache, pain in the chest region, discomfort during the night or when weather is cold it increases Kapha and causes the production of mucus which causes blockage of nasal passage, sore throat, etc.
CAUSES OF COUGH AND CHEST CONGESTION
Usually, cough is caused if there is any presence of irritant in the airway but in certain ailments also cough is caused. And such cases are flu, rhinitis, etc which causes severe to mild cough. In the case of flu, the cough can be severe and dry. Another condition is called croup, which causes very noisy coughs mostly during nighttime. The cough is sometimes termed barking cough as the cough can be very loud and disturbing for the patient. In the case of acid reflux, it causes coughing in children. DESMOID TUMOR Other conditions are asthma, allergies, sinusitis, etc. Some other causes are fumes, dust, and smoke which have minute particles that can enter the air passage and irritate the nasal passage as well as throat.
Chest congestion is common in babies and causes can be a viral infection, allergies, deviated septum, breathing air that is polluted, etc. In severe cases, it is caused if the baby has asthma, flu, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, etc.
अधः प्रतिहतो वायुरुध्व॑स्रोतः समाश्रितः । उदानभावापन्नः कण्ठे सक्तस्तयोरसि ।।
According to Ayurveda, the Vayu from downward gets aggravated due to nidana and moves up invading the srothas. udana vayu moves in an upward direction traveling from uras and kanta then invades shiras. This collectively, the aggravated dosha with Vata comes out forcefully out through the throat producing a loud sound.
COMMON REMEDIES TO GET RID OF BABY’S COUGH CHEST CONGESTION
Common remedies that can be done to cure these conditions include care in the first place. The babies are so small that they need a lot of care and any exposure to pollutants can cause severe problems in them. Certain remedies that can be done are giving warm baths to babies which helps to clear the congestion and provides relief to the baby. Their food habits should be taken care of and clothes or diapers, if they are wet, should be changed immediately as they can cause congestion and cough. While bathing them the baby should be given massages in the region such as nasal bridge, temples, and forehead, this helps in clearing the airway and removing excess mucus present in that region.
Coughs of infants can be cured by giving them hot water to drink, giving them moisture to the nasal pathway through humidifiers and use of essential oils for massaging muscles to ease pain caused due to cough.
AYURVEDIC REMEDIES TO GET RID OF COUGH AND CHEST CONGESTION
Ayurveda cures an individual keeping in view of their age and Prakriti. Every disease is cured from a different perspective. These small humans that are our babies are so sensitive that you have to be very cautious. Medication and remedies for babies are different as compared to grown-ups. Some common remedies for cough are dalchini (Cinnamomum verum) and Mulethi (Glycyrrhiza glabra). They are prepared as kwatha and can be given twice a day, this reduces cough and removes the irritation in the throat. Another thing that can be given is Amala (Phyllanthus embolic) and Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) juice, which clears the infection in the throat or infection in the bronchioles. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) and Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a very beneficial solution. Tulsi has a lot of beneficial uses, it has properties like antioxidants, anti-aging, fights fever, etc whereas ginger treats all the irritation in the throat. Other remedies are honey and turmeric (Curcumin longa), which are antipyretic and cures congestion in the chest, and curtail Kapha.
