Abstract
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited lung disorder. Lungs are an important part of the body as it helps in inhaling oxygen from the environment and exhaling carbon dioxide. These are the pair of spongy organs that are located on both the sides of the chest. Lungs are the primary organ of the respiratory system. Lungs are the part of the lower respiratory tract that begins at the trachea and branches into bronchioles. Introduction
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder of the lungs. This is a serious genetic condition that causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. This kind of damage results in buildup of thick, sticky mucus in the organs. It affects the cells that produce sweat, mucus and digestive juices. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This disease is a progressive and requires daily care. The secreted fluids are normally thin and slippery but in this disease these secreted fluids become sticky and thick. These fluids lungs up tubes, ducts and passageways instead of lubricating the pathway. People who are suffering from cystic fibrosis have a higher level of salt in their sweat.
Etiology/Causes
This is caused by the mutation in the gene that is cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene. This results in the stick, thick mucus in the respiratory and digestive tract. To develop this disease a child needs to inherit one copy of the gene from each parent and if a child inherits only one copy of the gene then they won’t develop cystic fibrosis. But they will be carriers and could pass the defect gene to their offspring.
Clinical Features/Signs And Symptoms
The main symptoms of this disease are salty-tasting skin, poor growth and poor weight gain. Other symptoms of this disease are
- A persistent cough with expectoration (thick mucus)
- Wheezing
- Repeated lung infections
- Breathlessness

The only risk factor is family history because this disease is inherited in nature.
