ABSTRACT

Colon diseases are often involved between the cecum and rectum. Ulcerative Colitis

INTRODUCTION

Ulcerative colitis is known to be a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the colon. It is characterized by inflammation restricted to mucosa and submucosa of the colon. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by relapsing and remitting mucosal inflammation. This condition starts from rectum and it can extend up to proximal segments of the colon.

CAUSES

The exact cause of this condition is still unknown. In previous studies, diet and stress were suspected as a reason for this condition. Immune system malfunction is one of the major possibilities for ulcerative colitis. When a person’s immune system tries to fight with invading bacteria or virus, the person’s irregular immune response causes the immune system to attack the cells of his/her own digestive tract. So this condition is autoimmune in nature.

CLASSIFYING ULCERATIVE COLITIS ACCORDING TO ITS LOCATIONS

  • Proctosigmoiditis: When the inflammation is involved around the rectum and sigmoid colon (pelvis colon). It shows symptoms such as tenesmus (a constant feeling of having to go to the bathroom to empty the bowel), abdominal cramps, abdominal cramps etc.
  • UIcerative proctitis: In this the inflammation occurs to the closest area of anus and it’s called the rectum. It shows symptoms like bleeding with stool, rectal pain etc.
  • Pancolitis: It is the type which often affects the entire colon. It shows symptoms such as severe bleeding with stool, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss etc.
  • Left-sided colitis: In this type the inflammation extends from the rectum to the descending portion of the colon. It shows symptoms such as abdominal cramps and pain on the left side, bloody diarrhoea, tenesmus (a constant feeling of having to go to the bathroom to empty the bowel) etc.

DIAGNOSIS

  • Blood test (shows anaemia, infection)
  • Stool sample (helps to detect any infection and parasite in the colon)
  • X-ray (it is the most common test for it diagnosis)
  • Colonoscopy (a long, flexible tube and on the end a camera and light is attached to look inside of the colon and rectum.)
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy

  • Anti-inflammatory like Oral 5 aminosalicylates
  • Corticosteroids
  • Immunomodulators
  • Antidiarrheal medicines
  • Pain relievers

In ayurveda this condition shares certain symptoms with Raktatisara; it includes abdominal pain, rectal burning, rectal bleeding, loss of stool, passage of mucus, rectal urgency (sensation of incomplete evacuation) etc. In ayurveda it is caused due to increase in the pitta dosha. According to ayurveda, excessive spicy food (amla, lavana, katu), ratrijagaran (Not sleeping at night time) etc. Prolonged pitta atisar lead to Raktatisara. In ayurveda the first line of treatment is nidhana parivarjana. It can also be treated by maintaining proper diet such as they should avoid all kind of citrus fruits, green leafy vegetable, onion, ginger, cucumber, chickpeas, kidney beans, black gram, dairy products, red and green chillies and all kind of packed food. They should also avoid tea, coffee, soft drinks, and alcohol. There are some practices which can be beneficial in this such as pranayam. There are some home remedies for ulcerative colitis like marigold flower petals water, rose petal water etc they help with control in excessive bleed and burning sensation.
