“Rotator cuff” is made up of mainly four types of body muscles and their tendons which connect the humerus (bone of the upper arm) to the shoulder socket. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint that connects the upper arm. If you are suffering from tendinitis, it means that the tendons are inflamed or irritated. It usually occurs over time and due to the keeping of shoulder in one position for a while or sleeping on the shoulder every night or if participating in the activities that mainly requires uplifting of the arms over the head.

The main Symptoms that are Associated with the Rotator Cuff Injury may cause:

  • Dull ache deep inside the shoulder
  • Disturbed sleep when you lie on the affected shoulder

How Rotator Cuff can be Caused?

Rotator cuff problems can be anticipated for those who are regularly engaged in physical activities that involve repetitive arm motion, baseball pitchers, and may come as a surprise to others for which these problems are so common.

1. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis:

Rotator cuff tendinitis is more common in middle- aged people and young athletes. It usually occurs when a normal healthy tendon gets inflamed or injured and often results in a repetitive overhead activity such as swimming, tennis, painting, etc.

Some diseases like diabetes and obesity may also be associated with rotator cuff tendinitis.

2. Rotator Cuff Tear:

Rotator cuff tear occurs when the tendon is torn from the arm bone and is common in middle to old aged people. A tear may be caused by trauma to the shoulder or fall on the shoulder.

Smoking, as well as obesity, may also increase the chances of tearing the rotator cuff.

3. Rotator Cuff Tendinosis:

Rotator cuff tendinosis is a condition where the tendon degenerates due to the increasing age. As the age increases, there is a decrease in the blood supply to the rotator cuff tendons. Hence when the tendons become injured they do not heal or recover as well. These weak tendons are more prone to inflammation and tearing.

What are the Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Pain?

  • Sharp pain and swelling on the front or lateral part of the shoulder and upper part of the arm.
  • Many people may complain of difficulty in performing daily life activities such as combing the hair, reaching behind the back and sleeping on the affected shoulder.
  • Throbbing pain is also more common.
  • Pain radiates down the arm from the shoulder.

Always keep it in mind that people with this disease do not experience any pain and the severity of the tear does not correlate with the pain. It means the person with partial tear may experience severe pain while the person with a complete tear may not experience any pain at all.

What are the Risk Factors for Rotator Cuff Tendonitis?

Here are some following factors that may increase the risk of having a rotator cuff injury:

  • Age:

As a person gets older, the risk of rotator cuff injury increases and is common in people who are older than the age of 40.

  • Certain sports:

Regular use of repetitive arm motions by athletes such as tennis players, baseball pitchers, archers have a greater risk of having this disease.

  • Family history:

There may be an involvement of a genetic component which is involved with rotator cuff injuries which appears to occur more commonly in some families.
