Abstarct

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) was formerly known as oat cell carcinoma. Due to the differences in biological and clinical characteristics SCLC is different from other non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). SCLC is a less common one as compared to later. SCLC is an aggressive form of cancer as compared to the NSCLC as the cancerous cells in the former grow much more rapidly and metastasize quickly and easily. Introduction

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a faster growing cancer in which lung cells grow uncontrollably and rapidly affect other organs easily as well. Any part of the lung can be affected by this cancer and is life threatening in most of the cases. SCLC is of two types, i.e. Small-cell carcinoma and Combined small-cell carcinoma. Also there have been seen the association of the SCLC with paraneoplastic syndrome, i.e. substances produced by tumor causing different sets of symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms

Usually the SCLC do not cause any symptom which means it is asymptomatic however as this cancer spreads very rapidly and easily to other body parts and when this happens symptoms start to appear.

Shortness or difficulty in breathing
Mucus containing blood from the lungs
Unexplained weight loss
Wheezing and discomfort in chest
Pain in the chest
Loss of appetite and fatigue
Continuous hoarseness or cough
Swelling on the face and hands
Difficulty in swallowing due to compression of esophagus
Mental disturbances and seizures
Invading in bones result in bone pains
Weakness in muscles

Causes

The exact cause behind the Small cell lung cancer is unknown however there are certain risk factors or precancerous changes in the organ which in future can cause cancer. These precancerous changes result in rapid growth of lung cells due to the abnormal functioning of cells and their DNA. If these changes occur in many DNA of the cells, it results in cancer. With time, some of the cells from the primary tumor or cancer site break and reach other sites in the body and invade there.

Diagnosis

As SCLC do not cause signs and symptoms until the cancer metastasizes to other parts of the body, which is an advanced stage. But sometimes it can be diagnosed at early stages during a diagnostic test for some other medical condition

Chest X-ray
CT (Computed tomography) scan
MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
Bronchoscopy
Sputum culture

Further there is done staging of the SCLC through various methods and treatment is started as per the stage the patient is in.

Treatment of Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

SCLC is usually considered to be incurable when it reaches a certain advanced stage and treatment is given to relieve the symptoms not for curing the disease. However, diagnosing it at an early stage can help in controlling it. Conventionally surgery is done to remove the tumor if it has not spread to other parts of the body but usually it is not the case with SCLC. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also given.
