REVIVE YOUR KIDNEYS AND SUPPORT THEM NATURALLY WITH ANCIENT HERBS

ABSTRACT

Kidneys are the pair of bean shaped organs located below ribs on either side, behind the abdomen. The main function of the kidney is to filter the blood and urine formation, thus it is the prime organ that maintains the water and electrolyte imbalance in the body. Some hereditary or acquired factors such as infection, stones or other such causes lead to the gradual loss of kidney functions and resulting in kidney diseases. This loss of function may be asymptomatic in nature and that’s why it remained unnoticed and progressively leading to chronic kidney disease and renal failure i.e. the state of complete loss of kidney functions. In this article we are going to discuss the various diseases related with kidney disorders, common clinical manifestations of kidney disease, their possible causes/risk factors, along with some beneficial herbs for reviving the kidney functions.

kidney disease

INTRODUCTION

There are numerous diseases associated with the kidneys. Most common of which include- kidney stones (the crystals deposits in kidneys made from crystal forming substances such as oxalate, calcium, uric acid etc.), glomerulonephritis (a syndrome that affects a group of cells that have a prime role in blood filtration i.e. glomeruli- this syndrome is comprised of both nephritic and nephrotic syndrome), pyelonephritis (recurrent kidney infection), poly-cystic kidney disease (formation of multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys), and chronic kidney disease (also termed as renal failure- end stage originated due to long standing kidney diseases). Apart from these several urinary tract infections (UTIs) may also be found in association with kidney disease.

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS

The clinical features of kidney disease vary according to the part of the kidney involved, type of infection/ cause of the disease and the severity of the disease. As kidneys are designed to be the highly adaptable organs so, mostly kidney diseases are asymptomatic, but the symptomatic conditions have some common clinical manifestations that include reduced urine output, proteinuria primarily albuminuria (presence of protein contents in the urine), swelling in the feet or ankles, continuous itching, increased frequency of muscle twitching and cramps, chest pain if there is fluid retention in heart lining, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, vomiting, fatigue and weakness, shortness of breath (if fluid retention takes place in the lungs), pain in lower abdomen, fever may be present in infective cases along with recurrent UTIs.

CAUSES

The two leading causes of kidney diseases these days are high blood pressure and diabetes. These both cause damage to many organs of the body including the kidneys. Other factors that may increase risk for developing kidney disease include smoking, old age, obesity, family history of kidney disease, abnormality in the kidney structure, underlying cardiovascular disease, kidney infections, prolonged obstruction in urinary tract such as prostate enlargement, kidney stones or due to some cancerous overgrowth.

AYURVEDIC HERBS BEST FOR KIDNEYS

Kidneys are highly adaptable organs, few of the Ayurvedic herbs help in maintaining/ supporting normal functions of the kidney. These are:

Varun (Crataeva nurvala) It is one of the best herbal supplements for the kidney. Its bark consists of saponin and tannin. Furthermore, this herb is described in Ayurvedic texts.

In this, the bhedishleshmkrichashmmarutaan means this herb has the ability to breakdown the build up by kapaha (calcifications or precursor of the kidney stones), correcting the condition of oliguria (reduced urine output), and also aid in dissolving the kidney stones (ashm), and clearing the apan vayu, that will relieve various pain related symptoms in micturition and kidney region. Also, nihanti gulm helps in reducing the size of the urinary tumors or overgrowths.

Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris) is used as the herbal tonic for the urinary tract with amazing diuretic actions. It is also known for its strength enhancing and aphrodisiac properties like increasing sperm count, stamina booster and sexual vigor. Tribulus terrestris is having a rich amount of nitrates, with some volatile oils and less amount of one alkaline compound. Gokshura on regular use has the capability to provide strength to kidney cells and helps in regeneration.

Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) is used for its diuretic action. It aids in inducing micturition and also relieves dysuria (painful micturition). This herb is having best action to remove the excess deposition of fluid from the various body parts, thus aids in gradual reduction in swelling of feet and ankles, pleural fluid and fluid buildup in pericardium due to underlying renal diseases. The main diuretic action of this herb is due to action of an alkaline compound i.e. Punarnavine obtained from its leaves and roots. This alkaline compound invades the capillaries and enhances the blood flow and facilitates the free passage of urine.

Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri) is the most efficient drug well known for its effects on liver related disorders. But it has equally important results on kidney related disorders. It is also known as stone crusher because of its amazing properties that help in dissolving the stones and also prevent further formation of stones in the kidneys or other parts of urinary tracts. It also aids in relieving excess swelling from the body. It improves kidney functions, helps in reducing the oxidative stress from kidney fibrosis, and also increases the rate of kidney cell proliferation in diabetic patients.

Kalmegh (Echinacea- Andrographis paniculata) is another herb that can be used in both liver and kidney related disorders, it is shown in various studies that echinacea administration in renal ischemia (oxidative death of tissue) decreases the malondialdehyde and catalase enzyme levels in the kidneys. This shows that the echinacea may be effective in preventing the oxidative injury to the kidneys.
