The function of the female reproductive system is to produce eggs, transporting eggs, fertilisation, implantation, menstruation, sex hormone production, gestation, birth. Nowadays some of the diseases are very common such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted disease, infertility, poly cystic ovarian disease (PCOD). In today’s world the PCOD is common among every woman of any age group with an active reproductive system. One out of ten teen girls are suffering from this condition. SO let’s discuss it in detail.
INTRODUCTION
Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is the most common hormonal disorder. It is a condition in which ovaries produce large amounts of immature or partially mature eggs, over the time these eggs become ovarian cysts due to this the ovaries become bulky and start producing male hormone which is testosterone. Increase in the level of male hormone the female might experience such symptoms like irregular menstrual cycle, abdominal growth of hair on face and body. 3.7%-22.5% of the Indian women population is suffering from this condition. In this condition the fertility of the women doesn’t affect them as the women can still ovulate. The main difference between PCOD and PCOS is that PCOD is less severe, it primarily affects ovaries and more over reproductive health but PCOS is the condition the whole body can be affected as it is a metabolic disorder. The symptoms of both PCOD and PCOS overlap each other but PCOS is far more complex than PCOD.
In view of ayurveda the PCOD and gynaecological disorders came under Yonivyapada. From three of the dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) the vata dosha is predominantly responsible for Yonivyapada. According to acharya sushruta, out of three dosha (vata, pitta, kapha), the pitta dosha and apana vata dusti are predominantly responsible for Yonivyapad.
CAUSES
The exact cause of PCOD is unknown but there are some significant factors which are responsible for this condition.

- Sedentary lifestyle: Sedentary lifestyle can aggravate insulin resistance.
- Excess insulin production: When the body tissue does not respond to insulin, this forces the body to produce more insulin and high insulin levels can lead to ovaries to produce more male hormone (androgen), which causes PCOD.
- Excess androgen production: The ovaries produce excess androgen hormones which can cause hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism) and acne.
- Stress : Stress can lead to hormonal imbalance which contributes in developing PCOD.

AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW
In view of ayurveda, the gynaecological disorders came under Yonivyapada. It is very difficult to find exact correlation of PCOD in ayurveda. A lifestyle of the women can lead to stress, an unhealthy diet which hampers the Rasa dhatu and it affects the other remaining dathus. As per Asrayi Asraya bhavas, out of three dosa (vata, pitta, kapha) kapha dosha get affected which causes blockage of srotas, due to which the vata and pitta dosha also get aggravated which causes obesity, hormonal imbalance. Apathya Aahara Viharas (unwholesome diet and lifestyle) is one of the major cause of Aama in Rasadhathu which in turn cause Arthava Upadathu Dushti. This can lead to improper selection of ovum. The remaining Dhathus got vitiates and it leads to weight gain, hair loss. There are some herbal formulation which can be given in the condition of PCOD such as Shatpushpa (Anethum sowa), Kounch (mucuna prurita), Latakaranj seeds (caesalpinia cristata), Shivlingi (bryonopsis laciniosa). The drugs which are given for treatment are mainly have the property of vata pitta and kapha doshahara. It can also be treated with maintaining proper diet such as in grains they can have whole wheat oats, sorghum millets, browntop millets, in fruits they can have papaya, avocado, apple, pear, blueberries, and apricots. Dairy products should be prohibited. There are some yoga asanas which can help in PCOD such as balasana (child pose), cat-cow pose (marjaryasana-bitilasana), standing forward fold (uttanasana) and cobra pose (bhujangasana), bow pose (dhanurasana), mill churning pose (chakki chalanasana) etc.
