Ayurvedic Treatment For Berylliosis With Herbal Remedies
Abstract
Berylliosis is a form of metal poisoning caused by inhalation of beryllium dust or its compounds. Beryllium is a metallic element used in high-technology ceramics, electronics, dental alloy preparation, etc. The most common symptoms of berylliosis are fever, dry cough, fatigue, etc. Berylliosis is a granulomatous disease. Continued exposure to beryllium causes the development of small inflammatory nodules called Granulomas.

Introduction
Berylliosis is also known as Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD). CBD is a chronic allergic-type lung disease which is caused by exposure to beryllium. There are two types of Berylliosis- Acute and Chronic. The most common symptoms of Berylliosis are fever, cough, shortness of breath, weight loss, etc. Some people may not have symptoms. CBD is more likely to develop in individuals who work in industries that manufacture beryllium. This disease has a slow onset and progression. Berylliosis is a granulomatous disease in which small inflammatory nodules are formed. Granuloma formation is seen in other conditions such as Sarcoidosis and Tuberculosis, therefore the distinction between these diseases can be difficult. Rarely can one get granulomas in other organs including the liver. Definitive diagnosis of berylliosis is based on the history of the patients, lung biopsy, chest X-ray, etc. As per Ayurveda Berylliosis is characterized in Agantuja Vikara which means disease caused by entrance of a foreign body or some injuries. It is a kapha dominant disease.
Types Of Berylliosis
There are two types of Berylliosis
- Acute Beryllium Disease – It is rare now because most industries have reduced exposure levels. It has a rapid onset and progresses quickly.
- Chronic Beryllium Disease – It develops in people who have become sensitized to beryllium. It is an autoimmune condition. Beryllium exposure can lead to a cell-mediated immune response. T-cells become sensitized to beryllium and then proliferate. It leads to the release of proinflammatory cytokines and granulomatous.
Causes Of Berylliosis
Exposure to the beryllium is the underlying causative factor. Chronic beryllium disease is more likely to develop in individuals who work in industries that manufacture beryllium. Industries that use heavy beryllium are electronics, defense industries, dental/alloy appliances, automotive, etc. Beryllium exposure tends to occur by inhalation of beryllium dust or its compounds but also it can occur by skin exposure which can cause rashes on the skin.
Signs and symptoms
The onset of symptoms can range from weeks up to years. The symptoms of Beryllium disease are written as follows
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Cough
- Joint pain
- Chest pain
- Weight loss
- Night sweats
- Loss of appetite
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of berylliosis is based on different factors which are written below
- History taking and physical examination of a patient – Diagnosis of CBD can be done by history taking in which the doctor will ask about symptoms like cough, weight loss, night sweats, fatigue, etc. The history of exposure to beryllium is important to consider. Physical examination may reveal crackles, rash, lymphadenopathy, and hepatosplenomegaly.
- Chest X-ray / CT- scan – Chest X-ray can show scarring in the lungs.
- Breathing test – It is done by spirometry. It can measure how much air a person can inhale or exhale.
- Beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test – It measures the reaction of WBC to beryllium. If it shows positive results it means the person is sensitised to beryllium.
- Bronchoscopy – This is done by inserting a tube with a camera into the lungs.
- Lung biopsy – It can show granulomatous inflammation.
Ayurvedic View
According to Ayurveda, there are two kinds of vikara
- Nija vikara- Nija vikar is an endogenous disease caused by an imbalance of three doshas: Vata, Pita, and Kapha.
- Agantuja vikara- It occurs when the patient suffers from exogenous or external factors such as poisonous substances, blunt trauma, fire, etc.
Chronic Beryllium Disease is characterized by Agantuja Vikara because CBD is caused by exposure to beryllium. As per Ayurveda, in the case of Agantuja vikara, it will not vitiate the three doshas in the initial stage, later will vitiate the doshas and show the symptoms as manifested. It may be caused mainly by Kapha (dominant) and Vata Dosha.
Pathogenesis (Samprapti) According To Ayurveda
- Due to causative factors (Nidana sewan) like exposure to beryllium and cold, dry, oily food, kapha and vata dosha will vitiate.
- Vitiation of kapha and vata dosha will weaken digestive fire(Agnimandya) and signify the state of the inadequate process of digestion.
- Then Ama will be formed due to indigestion (Ajirna) and circulate all over the body through channels (Strotas) and get lodged in different parts of the body.
- Vitiated kapha will block the Pranavaha Srotas (Vital system which represents the respiratory and circulatory system) and show symptoms like shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, etc
- Vitiated vata will show symptoms like joint pain.
Symptoms (lakshana) According To Ayurveda
- Cough (Kasa)
- Breathing difficulty (shwasa avrudh)
- Joint pain (Sandhiruja)
- Chest pain(Parshavshoola)
- Loss of appetite(Bhaktadwesh)
Treatment (Chikitsa) According To Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, the shodhana procedure (panchakarma) is a major treatment modality that involves bringing vitiated doshas to the koshtha and eliminating them.
- Vaman karma (Therapeutic emesis) – Vaman karma is the prime procedure (Pradhan karma) meant for inducing therapeutic vomiting indicated for the purification of urdhwa bhaga (upper part) of the body. In this process content of the stomach including kapha and pitta is expelled out of the body through the oral route. This therapy could be done by giving herbs like Madanfala, yashtimadhu, etc.
