How to Manage Costochondritis(Chest Pain) in Ayurveda? – Natural Treatment

Abstract

Have you ever encountered pain in the thorax region and said oh my God! it’s a heart attack….actually whenever there is a pain in the chest region the thing that usually comes to the mind is our heart is affected or it is the lungs. If the pain is present externally then the possibility is more of ribs being affected but there is someone who is present there and acts as a support and plays a very important role in holding the ribs and protecting the internal organs. They are the costal cartilage, which connects each rib to the sternum. A painful condition affecting these cartilages is costochondritis.

WHAT IS COSTOCHONDRITIS?

Costo represents costal cartilage, and chondritis means inflammation in the osseous matter that is the cartilage. Costochondritis is a painful condition which involves swelling of the costal cartilages. Due to its pain, it is mostly mistaken for a heart attack or heart-related abnormalities. This condition is also known as chest wall pain or costosternal chondrodynia.

As per Ayurveda, this condition is related to vitiated Vata and shoola that is pain is one of the main characteristics of the Vata diseases, and bones, as well as cartilages, as they are considered as asthi dhatu are related to Vata in a reciprocal relation which means as Vata increases asthi dhatu decreases.

This condition doesn’t have a specific reason for its manifestation or occurrence but still, some actions can become the cause of this disease. These can be overexertion of the muscles of that region; strenuous exercise causes vigorous movement and can create strain in the thorax region; severe coughing also creates high pressure and exertion; infection in the costochondral joints can cause pain and can make the joint weak; cancer can also be the cause like benign tumors in that region or malignant tumors from nearby internal structures like heart or lungs or even from breasts can travel and affect the joints; another condition that can affect the costochondral joints is arthritis, this condition makes the joints painful and weak.

The symptoms are sometimes linked with some other pathological conditions like cough or other lung ailments which include intense or severe coughing that causes pain. Very severe and sharp pain in the chest region and in the area where the cartilage joins the rib. Infection in the area where the ribs joining the cartilage can cause pus formation and pain, it is one of the main symptoms. Tenderness in the chest is also a major sign as this can also mean that the person is afflicted with this condition.
