Herniated Disc and its Treatment without Surgery
Abstract
Our spinal disc has a soft center (called the nucleus), enclosed in a rubbery exterior (called an annulus). When this nucleus slips out into the annulus through a tear, the condition is called a herniated disc. It is a common cause of pain in adults aged 35 to 50 years. The pain and other symptoms resolve in a few weeks whereas, in some cases, the symptoms get worse and the person may need surgery. This article will examine the causes, symptoms, and ayurvedic treatment of herniated discs without surgery.
Introduction
A herniated disc also known as Spinal disc herniation slipped disc, or bulging disc is a condition of the backbone in which the nucleus sacks out from between the vertebras into tougher exterior space. This can occur at any point in the spine but most commonly it occurs in the lower back region. The spinal canal already has limited space and herniation of the spine nucleus into it causes pain and irritation that is worse sometimes. This can also worsen nearby nerves, leading to pain, weakness, and numbness. The herniated part can irritate the nerves in its surroundings.
Ayurvedic Aspect
Ayurveda describes herniated discs as a disorder that occurred due to aggravated Vata dosha. Vata dosha is responsible for the movement and functioning of the spine in the body. The vitiation of Vata dosha leads to the occurrence of this condition. The panchakarma therapies along with oral herbal medications together help in balancing doshas and maintaining the severity of the disease. The various treatment methods are described in detail further in the article.
