Herbal Remedies For Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract

Kidneys are reddish-brown bean shaped organs and are a very important organ for filtration of the toxins. It is located on both sides in the retroperitoneal space in the body at a slightly oblique angle and the right kidney is slightly lower than left kidney and also smaller in size than the left kidney. It contains approximately one million nephrons, which is the structural and functional unit of kidneys. It receives about 1300 ml of blood per minute and the main functions of kidneys are to filtrate the blood and excrete the waste products through urine and maintain electrolyte balance in our body. If there is any abnormality in the filtration or excretion then the kidney disorders arise. So in this article, we will discuss chronic kidney disease and its herbal remedies.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Introduction

Chronic kidney disease is a type of kidney disorder in which there is a gradual loss of kidney function over a period of time. Initially there are no any symptoms but gradually symptoms appear with time. In this disease kidneys are not able to filter the blood the way they should. This is also called chronic kidney failure. In normal state, our kidneys filter wastes and excess fluids from the blood which are then removed through urine. In advanced stages, kidney disease can cause the buildup of fluids, electrolytes and wastes in the body. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in the blood and it will make the person feel sick.

Ayurvedic Aspect For Chronic Kidney Disease

In Ayurveda, kidneys are known as Vrikka. Vrikka is the fat tissue channel and is made from rakta (blood) and meda dhatu (fat tissue). The imbalance in these two dhatus will lead to kidney disorders. Our Acharya’s said that when a person eats unfavorable or contaminated food, consumption of excessive hot or liquid food stuff, excessive exposure to sun and fire and wind, due to lack of exercise, daysleep, intake of too much fatty food and excessive alcohol consumption will lead to raktavaha and medovaha strota dushti (vitiation) and causes Vrikka roga (kidney disorders).

Ayurvedic Treatment For Chronic Kidney Disease

Ayurveda is a part of ancient holistic medicine which is derived from knowledge and wisdom of Ayurvedic Acharyas. This ancient path has served the patients for 5000 years. Ayurveda is the pure and natural form of treatment which treats the diseases from its root cause. Ayurvedic treatment includes some classical herbal drug formulations which provide great relief from diseases without any side effects. Allopathy doctors believe that kidney disorders are neither reversible nor do they have permanent cure. They said that disease progress could be slowed by some medicines but after reaching the end stage the only solution for this disease lies in dialysis and at last kidney transplant. But these two procedures have their own drawbacks. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life. But our Ayurvedic experts believe that kidney diseases are not only reversible but also curable if detected earlier. The ancient science that is Ayurveda divides the human body according to doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) and dhatus (rasa, rakta, mansa, meda, asthi, majja, sukra) and so on. Unlike allopaths, Ayurveda doesn’t focus on treating the symptoms of the disease but also treat the whole body.

The treatment protocol for kidney disorders is to balance the raktavaha and medovaha strotas. So for that we should do the following things:

For vitiated Rakta Vaha srotas, one should do the treatment which evacuates the blood and those procedures are purgation, fasting and blood-letting and for medo vaha strotas, we should do emesis, purgation, blood-letting, physical exercise, fasting, sudation, herbal formulated smoking. Use haritaki (Terminalia chebula) powder with honey and mostly use rough food grain.

Along with medicinal therapies one should follow the preventive measures, balanced diet and some yoga asanas.

Pathya Ahar And Vihar (Favorable diet and lifestyle)

This includes: Red rice, Wheat, Radish, Lady-finger, Goat milk, Cow milk, Ghrit, Amla, Banana, Grapes, Coconut water, Jaggery, do light exercises, morning and evening walk, Cold water bath, get exposure to cold wind, apply sandalwood paste over body, get exposure of moonlight, detoxification of body by vaman (Emesis), virechan (purgation), etc.

Prevention

To reduce the risk of kidney damage then must follow the following preventive measures:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid Smoking
  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Avoid taking stress
  • Avoid taking medicines without the supervision of doctors
  • Do exercises daily

Some yogasanas are also helpful in kidney disorders. Some of the Yogasana one should try at home are:

Yogasana

  • Chakrasana
  • Gomukhasana
  • Vajrasana
  • Dhanurasana

Pranayaamas

  • Bhastrika Pranayama
  • Kapalabhati
  • Nadi Shudhi

These asanas are followed by 5 minutes of Shavasna (relaxing pose or lying down) for better effect of asana. These above said asana and pranayama can do approx 5-10 minutes.

Precautions

  • Patients try these Asana without any jerky movements of joints.
