Ayurvedic Treatment of Inguinal lymphadenopathy
Lymphadenopathy is abnormality in nodes under various categories like size, number or consistency. Inguinal lymphadenopathy is swelling in the lymph nodes of the inguinal region. In common terms, Inguinal region refers to the groin region. Lymph nodes are part of the body’s immune system, so play an important role in fighting against various infections. Lymph nodes filter out the lymphatic fluid and contain white blood cells which help to fight against infections. Inguinal lymphadenopathy itself is not a disorder but a warning sign indicating that the body is fighting against some infection. So, enlargement of these nodes suggests that there is something wrong with the body which needs to be taken care off.
How can it be identified?
Normally, a person can not feel lymph nodes but when enlarged they can be. Sometimes people can feel these swollen nodes themselves as a mass in the groin region. Also, can be identified by a doctor during physical examination.
There are various causes for inguinal lymphadenopathy. It occurs as a feature for numerous disorders or infections like-
- Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Sexually transmitted disease (STD)
- Fungal infections
- Urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Some injury
- Certain cancers like- testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, leukemia, melanoma.
These swellings can be presented as mobile or immobile, unilateral or bilateral. Unilateral means on one side and it usually indicates sexually transmitted disease or cellulitis. Bilateral swelling means on both sides and is typically found in syphilis.
Commonly present symptoms are-
- Pain that confides at the area
- Swelling- normal size is 0.5 to 1 cm in diameter, more than this is considered as abnormal
- Area becomes warm
Sometimes, these nodes are painless and presented as hard masses located in the groin region. If nodes are immobile, firm as well as painless, it could be a sign of some serious illness and needs medical attention as soon as possible.
Other symptoms that can also be present are- fatigue, night sweats, fever, weight loss.
As earlier mentioned, it is a feature or sign shown by the body for various infections or disease, these diseases can be diagnosed by a doctor by taking the full history of the patient and by physical examination like palpation.
In other cases – biopsy is also needed to rule out the reason behind swelling.
An alternative to biopsy is fine needle aspiration which can also be done to rule out the reasons.
Blood test- Certain blood tests can help to find out any underlying conditions, this include complete blood count (CBC), HIV etc.
Ayurvedic view about swelling of lymph nodes
Swollen lymph nodes are known as granthi shotha. Shotha occurs when there is disbalance of kapha dosha (one of the three doshas vata, pitta, kapha). Also, if there is toxic buildup, the body becomes prone to infection which leads to swelling of the lymph nodes.
