Abstract
Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a rare and autoimmune condition that can be characterised by the formation of blisters on the mucous membrane of the body. Mucous membrane pemphigoid is an uncommon vesiculobullous lesion, presenting with a myriad of clinical manifestations. This condition can affect the eyes, nose, mouth, throat and genitals but the mucous membrane of the mouth and eyes are often affected. Symptoms of Mucous membrane pemphigoid depend upon the progression and site involved of the disease. In this article, we are going to study in detail about Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and its ayurvedic treatment & herbal remedies.

Introduction
It is an autoimmune condition that involves the mucous membrane of the body. This condition majorly involved the oral cavity which is about 85%. Other than the oral cavity it involves the oro-pharynx (19%), conjunctiva (64%), genitalia (17%) and nasal cavity (15%). This condition involves blistering and erosions in the mucous membranes. Lesions often heal with scarring and hyperpigmentation. It is also known as Cicatricial Pemphigoid or Oral Pemphigoid. Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a condition that mainly involves people of old age with a peak incident at around 70 years. Cases of Mucous membrane pemphigoid occur more in females as compared to males. Causes of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
It is an autoimmune condition and the exact cause of this disease is still unknown. This condition may occur due to the attack of the immune system of healthy tissues. Autoantibodies can be described as the antibodies that attack the healthy tissue and the autoantigen can be defined as the normal tissue or cell that are targeted by the autoantibodies. In this condition, the autoantibody attacks the basement membrane zone of the epithelium leading to lesion formation.
Signs And Symptoms of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
The signs and symptoms of the Mucous membrane pemphigoid depend upon the site of the affected part of the body. Some of the common signs and symptoms of this condition are as follows

- Blisters on the scalp, face, limbs etc
However, there are some risk factors that can also lead to Mucous membrane pemphigoid. These may be age and sec. often, people of old age and females are more prone to this condition as compared to people of young age and males.
Diagnosis of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
The diagnosis of the Mucous membrane pemphigoid can be done by taking a proper physical and medical history. A proper physical examination of the blisters and scars can help in the diagnosis of Mucous membrane pemphigoid. Some of the diagnostic tests are as follows
- Biopsy with direct immunofluorescence in which a sample is taken from the affected part of the mucous membrane and examined under a microscope.
- Blood tests may be done to detect circulating antibodies against basement membrane antigens.
Management of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
The management of Mucous membrane pemphigoid also depends upon the affected site.
- One should maintain proper dental hygiene and can apply ointment, paste or creams and go for steroid injections in case of involvement of mouth, nose and skin.
- In case of involvement of eyes, corticosteroid eye drops can be suggested.
- Topical steroids or a soft diet can be advised in case of involvement of the oesophagus, trachea and larynx.
Ayurvedic Aspect of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
Mucous membrane pemphigoid is a rare condition that is autoimmune in nature and involves blister and erosion formation in the mucous membranes of the body. In Ayurveda, the condition of Mucous membrane pemphigoid can be correlated with Visphota. In Visphota, there is the formation of blisters on the body. It mainly involves the vitiation of Pitta and Rakta (Blood), however, it also involves some vitiation of Vata and Kapha dosha.

According to the above Shloka, the blisters in Visphota are white and reddish in appearance and contain pustules and eruptions with thin skin.
Ayurveda Management of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
The condition of Mucous membrane pemphigoid can be correlated with Visphota in Ayurveda. The management of Visphota can be done as follows

According to the above shloka, in case of secretion for lesions, burning and eruptions of the skin, then for management of these symptoms, local application of paste (Lepa) having cold potency, sudation, purgation and use of Tikta (Bitter) ghee can be taken.
Herbal formulations like Amritadi kwatha, Nimbadi Kwatha, Guduchyadi Kwatha, Chandanadi lepa, Mahatiktaka Ghrita, Tiktaka Ghrita, Visphotahara Kashayam etc. can be taken.
Panchakarma for Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
- Fasting (Langhana) – It helps to improve digestion and metabolism of the body. As Mucous membrane pemphigoid is an autoimmune condition and fasting helps in dealing with the condition of Ama (endotoxins).
- Therapeutic Purgation (Virechana) – Helps to remove aggravated Pitta dosha mainly and is very effective in case of inflammatory blisters.
- Therapeutic Emesis (Vamana) – It helps to remove aggravated Kapha and Pitta dosha.
Diet For Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
Wholesome Diet

- Vegetables like bitter gourd, pointed gourd etc
- Intake of bitter taste herbs
- Spices like black pepper
Unwholesome Diet
- Avoid milk products
- Avoid non-vegetarian food

1. Gandhak Rasayan

Dosage – 2 tablets twice daily with water after meals.
2. Kaishore Guggul
Kaishore guggul is a natural Ayurvedic formulation that contains ingredients like Amalakki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia Bellirica), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Guggul (Commiphora mukul) and many more.
