Premenstrual Syndrome

INTRODUCTION OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME

PMS can be understood as the psychological (mood swings, depression etc.) and physical symptoms (tender breast, general body pain) arising during the last phase of the menstrual cycle i.e luteal phase when all the hormones like FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone goes down in the body due to which these symptoms can arise uterus is ready to shed its endometrial lining which it has made during the phase of 28 days.

It’s the most common problem among females. Every other woman is suffering from PMS with different symptoms among different females. Research has shown that PMS occurs to 20-30% of the population of premenopausal women and 30-40% of the population of reproductive age females.

It can be mild to severe according to the symptoms. Some women have a very mild type of PMS and some have it so severe that it can interfere with their daily chores and some women don’t experience any kind of symptoms.

AYURVEDIC VIEW ON PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME

In ayurveda menses or menstrual blood is termed as ‘aartava‘ and menstrual flow occurs due to mainly vata dosha (apana vayu), artava itself has pitta properties so imbalance in any three doshas and rakta dhatu and dushti of these doshas are the main causes for the symptoms related to PMS. Different doshas have different types of properties due to which different symptoms and signs can be seen and menstrual flow will also depend on these three doshas including rakta dhatu (can be correlated with blood). We can also correlate this condition with aartav dushti which means vitiation in the aartav due to different doshas.

SYMPTOMS OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME

More than 200 symptoms are there which women complain about during the premenstrual syndrome. Different women have different kinds of symptoms according to their body type, prakriti (body composition) and lifestyle and vitiated doshas. Most women experience one or two symptoms in the premenstrual phase.

In ayurveda vataj dushti will produce symptoms like mood swings, breast changes, pricking pain, pitta dushti will produce symptoms like burning sensation, hot flashes, headache, acidity and the kapha type of dushti will produce symptoms like depression, crying spells, feeling of drowsiness etc.
