Abstract

Introduction

Cancer can start anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men and breast, lung, cervical and thyroid cancer are the most common in women. There are about 200 types of cancer, starting in any type of the body tissue. Medically cancer is known as malignant neoplasm.

Symptoms of cancer

Cancer is a complicated disease; you may have cancer without developing any symptoms or may cause noticeable symptoms that get worse quickly. Some of the cancer symptoms include

  1. Chronic tiredness
  2. Persistent pain
  3. Swollen lymph nodes
  4. Difficulty in breathing
  5. Difficulty in swallowing
  6. Unexplained weight loss
  7. Bruising or bleeding easily, etc.

Tumors are of two types

  1. Non cancerous (Benign Tumor)
  2. Cancerous (Malignant Tumor)

1. Non cancerous (Benign Tumor)

  • It is non-malignant tumor
  • Does not invade and spread to the nearby tissues or other parts of the body
  • Can be serious if pressed on vital structures such as blood or vessels.

Common types of Benign Tumors

  • Adenoma – Tumors form in epithelial tissues of the gland or organ (such as in the pituitary gland, colon and liver).
  • Chondroma – Form in cartilage, flexible connective tissue.
  • Lipoma – Form from fat cells. The most common benign tumor in adults is often found in the neck, arm, back and shoulder. They are usually round, movable, slowly growing and often to touch.
  • Fibroma – Form in dense connective tissue in tendons and ligaments. Such as uterine fibroids.
  • Hemangioma – They grow from blood vessels, the most common type of birthmark occuring on the head,neck and trunk.
  • Neuroma – These tumors grow from nerves. Two main types of nerve tumors are neurofibromas and Schwannomas, which can occur almost anywhere in the nerves.
  • Meningioma – Develop from the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord. About 9 in 10 are benign. They may grow slowly.
  • Lymphangioma – Developed in the lymphatic system, can cause fluid-filled cysts on skin and mucous membrane that lines mouth, nose, inner eyelids.
  • Osteoma – This type of benign bone tumor usually appears as painless lump or bumps near the joint such as knee or shoulder. Osteoid osteoma develops in long bones like in legs.
  • Papillomas – These grow from the epithelial tissues and usually grow in an outward direction. These tumors can result from direct contact with (HPV Human PapillomaVirus).

2. Cancerous (Malignant Tumors)

  • It first grow slowly, no symptoms noticed, this stage is latent stage
  • Tumor then grow rapidly
  • Invade and spread to the nearby tissues and other parts of the body.
  • Can come back after treatment.

Types of Malignant Neoplasm

There are five main types of Malignant Neoplasm

  1. Carcinomas
    • Begins in the skin or tissues that cover the surface of internal glands and organs. Develops in epithelial cells.
    • Carcinomas usually form solid tumors. They are the most common type of cancer.

    They include the following

    • Adenocarcinoma: They form in cells that contain mucus and fluids. Such as: breast, prostate and colon cancers.
    • Basal cell carcinoma: This type of carcinoma arises from the lower part of the epidermis.
    • Squamous cell carcinoma: These carcinomas form in the cells that are present beneath the outer surface of skin and organs like kidney, stomach, intestine and bladder.
    • Transitional cell carcinoma: These develop in the epithelium like ureter, bladder and kidney.
  2. Sarcomas
    • It begins in the tissues that connect and support the body.
    • Can develop in muscles, fat, tendons, nerves, joints, blood vessels, cartilage and bones.
  3. Leukemias
    • It is a blood cancer. It begins when healthy blood cells change and grow rapidly
    • The 4 main types of leukemia are
      1. Acute Lymphocytic
      2. Chronic Lymphocytic
      3. Acute myeloid
      4. Chronic myeloid
  4. Lymphomas
    • Lymphoma begins in the lymphatic system.
    • There are 2 main types of lymphomas:

In Ayurveda Cancer is known as “Arbuda”.

“गात्रप्रदेशे क्वचिदेव दोषाः सम्मूर्च्हिता मांसमभिप्रदूष्य।
वृत्तं स्थिरं मन्दरुजं महान्तमनल्पमूलं चिरवृद्धयपाकम्।।
कुर्वन्ति मांसोपचयं तु शोफं तदर्बुदं शास्त्रविदो वदन्ति।“ (Sushrut Nidana sthana 11/13-14)

According the Acharya Sushruta the aggravated dosha are accumulated in any part of the body and there they toxifies muscular tissues (Mamsadushya) producing circular (Vritta), Stable (Sthira), Mild painful (Mandarujam), large, broad, spread in body tissues, slowly growing, non-suppurative and causes edema consisting of fleshy growths. Such growths are known as Arbuda in ayurveda.

“वातेन पित्तेन कफेन चापि रक्तेन मांसेन च मेदसा च।
तज्जायते तस्य च लक्षणानि ग्रन्थेः समानानि सदा भवन्ति।।“ (Sushruta Samhita Nidana Sthana 11/15)

  2. Pittaj Arbuda

1. Vataj Arbuda

  • Vyathat vedna (Painful)
  • Krishna varna(Black in color)
  • Karkasha sparsha(Hoarse in touch)
  • Release Clear secretion when ruptured

2. Pittaj Arbuda

  • Daah(Burning sensation)
  • Pachyate (Suppurative)
  • Raktapeeta varna (red and yellow in color)
  • Uhna srav (Release hot secretion when ruptured)

3. Kaphaj Arbuda

  • Sheeta sparsha (cold to touch)
  • Alparuja (mild pain)
  • Atikandu (itching)
  • Pashanvat (hard to touch)
  • Chirabhivridhi (chronic in nature)
  • Release white secretion when ruptured

4. Medoarbuda

  • Snigdha(smooth)
  • Mahan (big in size)
  • Alparuja (mild painful)
  • Atikandu (itching)

5. Raktarbuda

  • Veins get affected
  • Mamsankur (small tissues) causes a bigger tumor
  • Pandu (Anemia)

6. Mamsarbuda

  • Repeated trauma or injury affects muscular tissue
  • Swabhavik Varna yukta (generalized skin color)
  • Painless
  • Non-suppurative
  • Stable
  • Palpated like stone
  • Usually in non-vegetarians

Treatment

Treatment is based on determining what etiology occurred. There are following treatment for cancer as said by various Acharayas

  1. Raktamokshana: Purifies blood by taking out the impure blood.
  2. Shastra-Kshaar-Agni karma in Mansavaha Srotas dushti.
  3. Rasayan Chikitsa (Anti-Ageing Treatment).
  4. Shirodhara: It is a technique that involves slowly and steadily pouring medicated oil, Milk etc on forehead Because Stress may contribute to the risk factors of cancer, that’s why Shirodhara is helpful in cancer.
