Para Ovarian Cysts : Ayurvedic Approach

Ayurvedic Approach In Gynecology

The health of women is of prime importance in Ayurveda. There is a detailed description of various stree roga along with their effective management in various Ayurvedic texts. The application of sthanik chikitsa has always worked wonders. The non-surgical and less invasive techniques used help in maintaining reproductive health, without imparting any adverse side effects. Here, let us see how Ayurveda helps in curing para ovarian cysts.

Symptoms for Para Ovarian Cyst

What are Para Ovarian Cysts!

Para ovarian cyst, also known as the para tubal cyst is an encapsulated fluid-filled sac. They are formed usually near the ovaries and fallopian tubes. They may arise from the vestigial remnants of the Wolffian duct or the peritoneal inclusions or tubal epithelium. They usually don’t adhere to any other internal organs. The cysts often dissolve on their own. While small para tubal cysts are common in women between the ages of 30 to 40, larger cysts are common in girls and younger women.

Are these cysts cancerous?

Unlike ovarian cysts, para ovarian cysts are usually benign ie; they will not become cancerous. But that doesn’t mean they are not to be treated. Left untreated they may cause various problems which may lead to the removal of ovaries( oophorectomy), fallopian tubes ( salpingectomy), or both. Also, giant cysts can exert pressure on your internal organs like the uterus, kidney, bladder, intestine, etc. This pressure may result in hydronephrosis. This means the kidney will swell up due to increased urine buildup.

Signs and Symptoms In Para Ovarian Cysts

Usually, para ovarian cysts are asymptomatic, typically due to their small size ranging from two to twenty millimeters in diameter. And thus in most cases, they are left undiagnosed and are discovered usually during other gynecological examinations. When these cysts are large, ruptured, or twisted they may cause pelvic or abdominal pain. Usually, these cysts are unilateral ie; they occur only on one side of the body. So ovulation and pregnancy may still be possible.

Do these cysts cause any complications?

Complications do occur in some cases. It includes Hemorrhage: if the cyst breaks it may cause internal bleeding, Torsion: implies twisting of the cyst on its pedicle(the stalk-like structure that holds the cyst in place). This may result in extremely debilitating pain, nausea, and vomiting. Fallopian tube rupture: if the cysts are large. A larger target may also result in uterine bleeding and painful intercourse. Other complications include intermittent abdominal pain, feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, constipation, frequent urination, etc.

How are these cysts diagnosed?

As most para ovarians are without any evident symptoms, they are usually diagnosed during other health examinations. Some cysts are identified during the early stages of pregnancy on ultrasonography (USG), or while doing pelvic examinations. Magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) can also be used as a diagnostic tool. But these cysts are highly mistaken for other ovarian masses so a proper diagnosis is always essential.

A quick glance through the modern treatment approaches

Surgical approaches are usually preferred. They include laparoscopic cystectomy which is a surgery to remove the cyst through a small incision in the abdomen. A laparotomy can also be done. But surgeries are always associated with their risk.

Ayurvedic Perspective Of Para Ovarian Cysts!

According to Ayurveda, the hard masses or cysts are referred to as Granthi. They are usually caused due to dosha imbalance. Mainly due to aggravation of Kapha dosha along with pitta and Vata. The root cause of cysts being genetic or hormonal causes, diet and lifestyle also play an important role in the aggravation of these cysts. Ayurveda being a branch of natural science provides an effective cure for various female disorders with the least side effects. Various herbal drugs which are granthihara and have chedana properties are used.

Some Simple Home Remedies to be followed!

Treatment is always essential for a cure, but some simple home remedies can be followed to alleviate the symptoms. The application of hot pads may help relieve the pain. Massaging on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and lower back may help loosen the tensed muscles. Relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises will help reduce anxieties and stress. If you are overweight, losing weight may help the body to regulate hormones. Diete Dietaryrol is also beneficial.
