This is some common introduction about Masticatory Muscle Myositis, let’s discuss this condition in detail.
Facts about Masticatory Muscle Myositis
- It is an auto-immune disorder which affects large-breed dogs.
- Initially, the disease is manageable in the acute phase.
- In Ayurveda the disease is characterized with the imbalance of Tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha along with ama dosha)
Stages of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
Two main stages occurs
1. Acute Stage: This stage is characterized by trismus, jaw pain and swelling. In the acute stage of the MMM, glucocorticoids produce rapid resolution.
2. Chronic Stage: The stage is mainly characterized by marked muscle atrophy. In chronic MMM glucocorticoid therapy may improve jaw mobility.
Causes of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
Following are some of the causes of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
- Infection – The disease may be developed by bacteria infection, viral infection, and reaction from medicines and exposure to allergens.
- Cancer – Inflammation of masticatory muscles results in the development of pre-cancerous muscles which later on develop into cancer. And the cancer may lead to an immune reaction which leads to the formation of masticatory muscle myositis and the process is also known as paracancerous effect.
- Abnormal Immune Reaction – Immune system didn’t react properly, which also aggravates the condition.
Symptoms of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
Early symptoms of Masticatory Muscle Myositis includes (In the acute stage)
- Lethargy
- Weakness
- Stiffness in muscles
- Difficulty while swallowing
- Fever
- Progressive muscle loss
- Difficulty in breathing
When the disease progresses (to the chronic stage) Symptoms include
- Anorexia
- Weight loss
- Muscles shrinkage (head bone becomes more prominent)
- Eyes may appear sunken (because of loss of muscle mass)
Diagnosis of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
- Blood test – This test measures the circulating antibodies which attack the muscle fibers.
- Muscle Biopsy – This is required to check the level of inflammation.
- EMG (Electromyography) – This procedure is useful in providing the difference between Masticatory muscle Myositis and polymyositis.
Management of Masticatory Muscle Myositis
The dogs with Masticatory muscle Myositis are mainly treated with corticosteroids, immuno-suppressive drugs, and anti-inflammatory drugs. In immuno-suppressive drugs, prednisone is the first choice given (and prednisone has side effects like excessive thirst, hunger, etc). When the disease progresses into a chronic stage then immuno-suppressive drugs like Azathioprine are added.
