Herbal Remedy For Cervical Dystonia
Abstract
Dystonia is a disease in which there is an involuntary movement of muscles. In this disease a person’s muscles contract uncontrollably. This contraction causes the affected part to twist involuntarily which further results in repetitive movements. This disease can affect one part (focal dystonia) or one or more parts (segmental dystonia) or all parts (general dystonia) in the body. Sometimes it can affect the muscles of the entire body. The movements in this disease may be painful and sometimes may have tremors or other neurological symptoms. One of the types of dystonia is cervical dystonia. In this article we are going to discuss this dystonia type and its ayurvedic management.
Introduction
Cervical dystonia is a rare neurological condition. In this disease your neck muscles contract involuntarily into abnormal positions. It causes repetitive twisting of the neck and head. This rare disorder can occur at any age, but most often occurs in middle aged people. The severity of this dystonia varies from person to person. This cervical dystonia is also called spasmodic torticollis. This is a common form of focal dystonia. This disorder causes discomfort to the patient due to abnormal postures. It can affect the quality of the life of patients.
Types of cervical dystonia (posture difference)
The muscle contractions involved in this disorder can cause the head to twist in different directions such as
- Head and chin twist sideways, towards shoulder (torticollis). This is the most common type of cervical dystonia
- Chin downward (anterocollis)
- Chin upward (retrocollis)
- Tilting sideways (laterocollis)
Etiology/Causes
In most of the cases with cervical dystonia, the cause is not known. But it is believed that people who have cervical dystonia have a family history. Some researchers have found gene mutations associated with this disease. This disease is also linked to head, neck and shoulder injuries.
Some other possible causes are
- Neurological disorder such as parkinson’s
- Medications such as antipsychotics blocks the dopamine
- A psychological problem
Clinical features/Signs and symptoms
Pain is the most common and frequent symptom of cervical dystonia. Usually symptoms of this disorder may begin slowly and can involve any muscle of the neck. The symptoms may get worse with time.
the common symptoms include
- Pain in neck region
- Difficulty in movement
- Hand tremors
- Head tremors
- Headache
- A raised shoulder
- Enlargement of neck muscles
Risk factors
The person who is at the risk of this disorder is
- Women (affected more than men)
- Between the ages 40-60 years
- Family history (high risk)
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is based on the clinical examination. Doctor will go through the detailed patient history. A complete physical examination alone can make a diagnosis of cervical dystonia. To rule out any underlying conditions the doctor will prescribe MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and some blood tests.
Treatment
There is no cure for cervical dystonia. In some people, symptoms may disappear without any treatment. But recurrence is common in this disorder. But in severe cases, conservative and surgical management should be done.
Medications
Botulinum toxin injection should be given into the affected neck muscle
Surgical
If medications do not show good results then the doctor might suggest surgery.
Surgical procedures may include
- Deep brain stimulation
- Cutting the nerve
But these procedures have their own side effects. So it’s better to start herbal treatment for this disorder
