Ayurvedic Treatment For Hemihypertrophy
Normal cells have a tendency to grow and there is a mechanism that governs the turning off of this growth after a certain time or when the cell acquires the adequate shape & size. But due to some mutation in genes or other factors, the body cells lose this ability to stop controlling their growth, and resulting in overgrowth of cells. One of such congenital diseases is hemihypertrophy. In this article we are going to discuss hemihypertrophy with the best Ayurvedic treatment for hemihypertrophy.
Hemihypertrophy also known as hemihyperplasia is a rare disorder which affects the half portion of the body. The half side of the body grows larger than the other side due to excess production of cells and resulting in the gross visible asymmetry of the body. The disorder is mostly congenital and evident at the birth and early stages of life. Sometimes this condition is not that much evident, but becomes visible with the person lying down. It also affects the normal gait of the person.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
The obvious sign of this disease is the tendency of one portion of the body to grow larger than the other side. As a result of which a limb can be longer or larger in size, which creates noticeable differences in posture and walking pattern of the individual. Other changes include the enlarged one side of the face or trunk. Speaking and feeding problems due to macroglossia (larger tongue).
These children are at high risk of developing tumors, especially abdominal tumors. Wilms’ tumor, a cancer of kidneys, is the most common example. Other cancers associated with hemihypertrophy are hepatoblastomas (cancer of liver), leiomyosarcomas (carcinoma of muscles) and adrenocortical carcinomas (adrenal gland carcinoma).
No exact cause of this disease is known. It is believed to be inherited in families. Genetic involvement is also considered, but the genes responsible are not well defined, as they differ from person to person. A mutation in chromosome 11 is being suspected to be in the association with the hemihypertrophy condition.
In Ayurveda this hemihypertrophy is considered as a condition arising due to excessive vitiation of vata and kapha dosha which leads to man’s dhatu vridhi (increase in the muscular tissues) of the one side of the body. Acharya had given the beautiful description of symptom arising from mans vridhi as (Sushruta samhita Sutra sthana 15/14) In this phrase, due to increased mans dhatu leading to overgrowth of muscle mass in the region of buttock, throat, abdomen, lips or tongue, arm, leg etc. body parts along with heaviness in the body and increased tendency of developing gulma (abdominal tumors), piles, etc.
