Natural Cure For Arachnoiditis
Abstract
Arachnoiditis is an inflammatory condition of arachnoid mater. Arachnoid mater is one of the membranes of meninges, the meninges are the ones that surround and protect the nerves of the central nervous system which includes the spine and brain. The inflammation of arachnoid can be the adverse reaction of certain chemicals, infection from bacteria and viruses. Due to this inflammation, the spine suffers from direct injury and also this inflammation can lead to scar formation or adhesions. These adhesions hence can result in sticking of spinal nerves (tissue development between leptomeninges) and this condition can be extremely painful. In this article we will discuss arachnoiditis in detail.
Introduction
If understood in basics then arachnoiditis develops when the arachnoid is damaged. Arachnoid is the part of membranous groups that cushions the brain and spinal cord nerves. In case of this cushion damage nerve functioning is hampered. Nerves in the spinal cord are surrounded by several thin tissues which are called meninges. These meninges provide nerves with a protective cushioning and arachnoid mater is the middle tissue of meninges. Conditions like arachnoiditis are the most common result of injury. It is a progressive disorder which simply means it tends to worsen with time if ignored for a long time and can be debilitating.
Causes of Arachnoiditis
- Chemicals: A dye which is typically used in myelograms (generally done by radiologists, in which dye is injected to the areas around the spinal cord) is blamed to be the reason for arachnoiditis in some cases.
- Infections: Some viruses and fungus can also affect arachnoid membranes. Even spinal tuberculosis can result in arachnoiditis.
- Chronic Compression: Long term compression in spinal nerves can also result in degenerative changes in the disc and sometimes narrowing of the spinal column.
- Complication: It can also represent itself as the complication of spinal anesthesia after surgery. Arachnoiditis is also a complication of lumbar puncture and spinal epidural injections. Moreover physical trauma to the spine like during a car accident, during a fall injury etc. can also result in inflammation of arachnoid.
Types of Arachnoiditis
- Adhesive Arachnoiditis: It occurs when the spinal nerves stick together and cause adhesions. This condition as mentioned earlier is painful and inflammation of arachnoid is there. This is the proggressive type.
- Arachnoiditis Ossificans: It means ossification of arachnoids.
- Cerebral Arachnoiditis: This type affects the surrounding membrane of the brain and causes severe headaches.
- Hereditary Arachnoiditis: It is a rare form and is due to genetic defects in the meninges.
- Neoplastic Arachnoiditis: It can even turn into cancerous growth.
- Optochiasmatic Arachnoiditis: It is the type of Arachnoiditis that is present behind the optic nerve. Thus can result in severe and complete vision loss.
Arachnoiditis Symptoms
- The symptoms may appear gradually or can also appear suddenly. These symptoms include tingling, numbness and weakness in legs. This tingling sensation is generally associated with a feel of crawling insects on your skin
- Or feels like water trickling down your skin.
- Pain which is having a characteristic type of electric shock sensation.
- Cramps in muscles, spasms and sometimes uncontrolled muscle twitching
- Bladder, bowel and sextual problems may also be associated.
- General fatigue, vision changes, tinnitus may be observed by patients.
- In rare cases hydrocephalus, lack of sweat and migraines may also follow.
Arachnoiditis Diagnosis
Specifically there is no standard test for this condition and it usually takes some time to get diagnosed. The imaging techniques that are generally used are Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan. Electromyogram is used to determine severity of the damage.
Arachnoiditis Treatment
The symptoms can be managed using various techniques. These techniques include physical therapy, pain medications, nerve stimulation, psychological support and acupuncture. Physical therapy includes exercises that strengthen the muscles and help people in managing the pain. This can also include massage with various oils that reduces muscle tension.
Pain medications generally involve use of non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, steroidal drugs and sometimes use of narcotic medications. If none of these works then finally surgery is recommended.
Ayurvedic aspect
The symptoms in this condition directly indicate towards the characteristic pain with involvement of vata. These specific vata characteristic pain include symptoms like sankoch (contractures), stiffness in joints (stanbh), bhedan and toda (pain that is pricking or shooting or bowring in nature). Confusion and exhaustion are also the result of vitiated vata. Vata vitiation when doing sathana sanchaya at a place then produces symptoms as mentioned above.
